PREMIER PADMINI

Introduced in India towards the mid-

sixties with a carburetted, four-
cylinder petrol engine that produced
40 bhp of peak power and 71 Nm of
torque.

Capable of top speed of 125 km/h.

Fuel efficiency was 25 kmpl.

Also known as Pad, Fiat car

 HISTORY OF PREMIER PADMINI
Manufactured in India from 1964 to 2000 by Premier Automobiles
Limited, a division of the Walchand group, under license from Fiat

Premier manufactured the Padmini at theirKurlaplant inBombay.

Marketed initially as the Fiat 1100 delight and beginning in 1973 as

the Premier Padmini.

Ruled the Indian car market and its popularity peaked during 1970s
and 80s.

Many leading icons of the time including legendary Rajnikanth, Aamir

Khan and many others had owned Premier Padmini during its prime
years.

 Reasons for downfall

Advent of more modern, more fuel-efficient cars from Maruti

Suzuki, the popularity of the Padmini slowly began to wane.

The liberalisation of the Indian economy in 1991, which allowed

foreign car manufacturers to launch operations in India.

Unable to compete with the more modern, value-for-money and

fuel-efficient cars manufactured by Ford, General Motors,
Daewoo, Honda and Hyundai.
In 1996, Premier introduced a
more modern variant. Named as
the Padmini S1

A diesel variant, called the 137D

was also introduced

Production was shut down

because of PALs management
problems.
Numerous examples still abound
astaxicabsin Mumbai.

These are now being phased out

due to new regulations enacted in
2013 by the government
disallowing vehicles over 20 years
old.

Many of these taxis now run on

CNGfor fuel economy.
 REVIVAL
High-tech R&D departments should be created.

Design can be modified.

Engine capacity should be increased.

Should be equipped with modern features like

GPS navigation system, Remote keyless entry
etc.

Should be equipped with safety features like ABS,

Air bags, Skid control system etc.

Service centres across India.
