3D PRINTING

WHAT IS 3D PRINTING?
3D printing is a manufacturing process that allows the user
to create a physical object from a digital design.

There are various 3D printing technologies that can be used

and materials that can be printed.

Printing in 3D is based on this principle:

A digital model is turned into a solid three dimensional

physical object by adding material layer by layer.
TECHNOLOGIES
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM):

The string filament material that is heated by

the nozzle that is melted to form the model.
(The cheapest type!)
TECHNOLOGIES
Stereolithography and Digital Light
Processing (SLA & DLP):

Both create 3D printed objects from a liquid

(photopolymer) resin by using a light source
to solidify the liquid material.
TECHNOLOGIES
Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

uses a laser to melt and solidify layers of

powdered material into finished objects.
TECHNOLOGIES
Material Jetting (Stratasys PolyJet and 3D Systems
MultiJet Modeling)

technologies are similar to inkjet printing, but instead

of jetting drops of ink onto paper, these 3D printers jet
layers of liquid photopolymer onto a build tray and
cure them instantly using UV light.
TECHNOLOGIES
Binder Jetting

Is similar to SLS in the way that the printer uses thin

layers of powdered material to build up an object,
but instead of using a laser that sinters the layer
together, these printers use a binding agent
extruded from a nozzle to bind the powder together.
TECHNOLOGIES
Selective Laser Melting and Electron Beam Melting
(SLM and EBM)

Two of the most common metal 3D printing

technologies. Just like SLS, these processes create
objects from thin layers of powdered material by
selectively melting it using a heat source. Due to the
higher melting point of metals they require much more
power a high power laser in the case of SLM or an
electron beam for EBM.

MODELING
Any 3D modeling software can be used to create a 3D
model.
Some examples are:
Blender
123 Design
Kompas 3D
Zbrush
TinkerCAD
And more!

3D printers read file formats of

STL or CAD
You just created a simple model!
Here is the technique from a 3D model on the
program to a real 3D object.
PRINTING
Once you have created your 3D model with the
modeling software, it will create a CAD file.

This file can be exported to the 3D printer.

When the printing process begins, it will create the

model layer by layer.

FINISHING
After your model is printed out, you can either leave it how it is
or retouch it

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
HOW CAN THIS BE USED FOR
EDUCATION?

3D printing goes along

with STEM. It is a
combination of using
science, technology,
engineering, and
mathematics in the
classroom.
3D PRINTING IN THE CLASSROOM
Science: Visually and hands on showing parts of the cell and parts of
the human body.
Mathmatics: Creating models for geometry and scaling objects
Language Arts: making words and letters a 3D object (the 3D pen
could be useful for writing activities)
Visual Arts: Making 3D sculptures
World History: Taking historical architecture or items from other world
cultures and making a 3D model from them.
Geography: Making a 3D map of a specific area on land.
STEM or STEAM: Making robotic parts or functioning pieces/parts
(screws, bolts, screwdriver, etc.)
There are many more possibilities!

If your school cannot afford a 3D printer, this website offers another way
to create your own model online.
Send in your creation and they will print it out for you.
It is not free but it is cheaper than buying a 3D printer and the materials
to go with it.

3D pen
Ranges from about $70 and
Up.
Filaments are about $23 for a pack of
All colors.
