THE SMART SCHOOL IN

MALAYSIA
Prepared by:
Nurul Shatirah
Lecturer: Dr Azmi Ibrahim Ayuni Nadrah
Introduction
Learning institution that has been systemically
reinvented in terms of teaching-learning practices and
school management in order to prepare children for the
Information Age.
It is one of the seven flagship application envisaged
under the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) initiative.
Creativity and better management of information is
facilitated through the use of technology where
students, teachers, administrators and parents are
better prepared for the challenges of the Information
Age.
Objective
The objectives of the Smart School, which are based on
Malaysia's National Philosophy of Education, are as
follows:

To produce a thinking and technology-literate

workforce.
To democratize education.
To increase participation of stakeholders.
To provide all-round development of the individual.
To provide opportunities to enhance individual
strengths and abilities.
Visions 2020
Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, Former Prime Minister of Malaysia, pointed
out the three core visions of the Smart School Flagship Application
during the Launching of Multimedia Super Corridor on 1st August 1996.
The visions are as follows:

1. Teachers will need to change their role in the electronic classroom

from being information providers to counselors to help students develop
know how and judgement to select information sources.

2. Key to success in the Information Age will be making the right

judgement between an awesome array of choices.

3. We are examining our education system to create a curriculum where

people learn how to learn for continuing education throughout their
lives.
Element of Smart School
The Smart School teaching and learning environment will
be shaped in four main areas, each of which will be a
critical element in defining the overall teaching and
learning experience for Smart School children:

Curriculum Assessment

Pedagogy Teaching-learning
Materials
Issues and Challenges
Heavy investment on facilities
Lack of manpower in handling the technical
problem.
Lack of technological infrastructure and teaching
materials in rural school area.
Lack of training
Student itself
Conclusion
A Smart School will evolve over time, continuously
developing its professional staff, its educational
resources, and its administrative capabilities.
This will allow the school to adapt to changing
conditions, while continuing to prepare students for life
in the Information Age.
The vision calls for sustained, productivity-driven
growth that will be achievable only with a scientifically
and technologically literate, critical thinking work force
prepared to participate fully in the global economy for
the 21st century.
The End!
