At risk for dental caries among school age children in Tucson related to
a lack of knowledge regarding proper dental hygiene practice as
demonstrated by dental caries being the number one chronic disease
in children according to the CDC and expression of concern from key
informants.
LITERATURE BACKGROUND

Aim: Evaluate a primary school-based tooth brushing program and its

effectiveness in reducing caries
Metro-South Health District: lowest socioeconomic status in Queensland,
Australia. Before introduction of fluoride in water in 2009, 4-6 year old children
showed a caries prevalence of over 80%(more than double than the rest of the
country)
Caries in schoolchildren high: increased intake of dietary sugars, poor oral hygiene,
and other factors associated with socioeconomic disadvantages
Cakar T, Harrison-Barry L, Pukallus ML, Kazoullis S, Seow WK. Caries experience of children in primary
schools with long-term tooth brushing programs: A pilot Australian study. Int J Dent Hygiene. 2017;00:1-8.

SUPPORT FOR THE INTERVENTION FROM THE LITERATURE

Brushing teeth with a fluoride toothpaste= MOST EFFECTIVE

School-based supervised brushing programs recommended by World Health
Organization (WHO)
30 month long Scottish school tooth brushing program showed a 32%-56%
reduction in caries in 5 year-olds
Implementation:
participating school incorporate the program into their daily personal hygiene routine
Pamphlets sent home to parents that outline the TB program and provide information on
preventive dental care
Audited annually by oral health therapists

Participation:
Children provided with: free toothbrush, toothpaste, and storage case
Class brushes teeth together at the same time every day
RESULTS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE

Schools with toothbrushing programs have a lower prevalence of dental caries

as compared to schools without a program
Toothbrushing is associated with improved periodontal health and reduced
caries
Pilot Studies suggests daily tooth brushing programs in schools are effective
methods for preventing caries in children from low socioeconomic areas
INTERVENTION EVALUATION

Immediately after the activity and demonstration on March 30, 2017, the
student nurses will ask the children to demonstrate back the motions of
how to properly brush and floss.

The student nurses will also ask the children which worked better in the
activity to clean the food out from between the teeth, the toothbrush or
the floss?
