In what ways does your media products use ,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
My product would be put in the documentary drama genre. I have used, developed and challenged forms and
conventions of real media products I have also applied conventional concepts of the documentary genre, but I
have also adapted it so that it gives my audience a different insight into the documentary genre. This is so that
the audience can experience some variation within the conventions of the documentary genre. This will keep
the audience engaged at all times. During my research I watched various films belonging to the documentary
genre such as super size, legend.
After watching these documentary's I had to understand the main conventions of this genre. I also took
inspiration from certain films I watched Bully and Amy documentaries evaluating different hybrids of this
genre helped me understand the different conventions this helped me add variation to my documentary and
make it original. In these films I analysed them very well such as analysing the mise en scene, lighting , editing
, camera and sound this helped me pick out what kind of documentaries use fades, cut shots and within sound
effective music that would help the audience feel engaged within the documentary.
In what ways does your media products use ,

Common codes and conventions used within documentary drama I evaluated:
There is a voiceover that is usually be authoritative in some way, encouraging the audience to think that
they either have some kind of specialist knowledge or as in the case of people like Michael Moore and
Nick Broomfield they suggest the right opinions that people should pay attention to.
Documentaries are seen as non fiction a convention of documentary is that all events presented to us
are to be seen as real by the audience.
Including natural sound and lighting this is used in Nick Broomfield's use of this in Biggie and Tupac
when they run out of sound
Interviews this is to express views within the documentary this is also used to get different views out and
send out the message
Text\Titles such as labels, dates this is a quick and easy way to convey information to the audience
In a documentary drama, this is a staged theatre which is dramatised re-enactments of actual events. This is
what i have produced through my media product and i feel i have followed the codes and conventions to be in
this category. I have included engaging stories from what i have researched which have been re-enacted to set
realism for my audience. In some aspects i have used natural sound such as tapping on the keyboard this will
allow my documentary seem more real to my audience so they can engage more.

Additionally, I done some secondary research on what colour to assign for my titles i came across a colour meaning website on
here i saw the meaning for black and white as these a juxtaposition i felt it matched the feel of my documentary as white meant
white is associated with light, goodness , innocence and purity and black meant black is associated with hidden, secretive
and the unknown. I feel these colours explain the meaning of my documentary showing innocence and purity can be
overshadowed by the unknown and secrets. I feel this relates to Millie and Amy within their stories showing that there
innocence can be taken for granted by unknown things .
In what ways does your media products use ,
develop or challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
After extracting key forms and conventions from the documentary drama
genre. I decided that i will use some of them and also challenge them by
breaking the fourth wall. I wanted to do this because i wanted my audience to
connect with Millie and how brave it is for her to be talking about her
devastating story that should receive the acknowledgement it deserves. I want
the audience to feel sorry for Milie and feel for her as she is very brave to be
speaking about her story of online grooming and how it impacted her life.
Breaking the fourth wall creates a moment that connects directly with the
audience on a more personal level allowing them to become something
beyond a observer.
Whilst developing these poster mockups, when i did my first and second poster mock up
i was using Adobe photoshop however i did my poster landscape which went against my
research which was of portrait posters. So with my landscape poster i had made i turned
it into a billboard as i felt i wanted to make my audience more aware of my documentary
and as billboards are placed in busy areas i feel this would reach my documentary out to
a wider audience. i want my documentary to get awareness as it is a very big issue within
world and want to people to stand up and stop abuse online. After changing my poster i
took new pictures of my protagonist and wanted to take these within a school on her
phone showing her looking down at her phone looking upset i felt this would be most
effective for my poster as this connotes that she feels isolated and vulnerable.

Shot Types
Furthermore in my documentary Glamourizing Abuse i add a variation of different shot types , such as i used a
establishing shot to introduce Millie and showing the location this would show the narrative to the audience and a insight
into the documentary. Also i used a lot of close ups within my documentary such to show the emotions of Millie and Immy
and the facial expressions of how they are feeling this will allow the audience to see the emotions throughout their stories.
Lastly I used a two way camera set up this was to show a conversation through a interview this makes a documentary look
more professional. These are shots that conventional to the documentary genre. All these shots presented Variety within
my documentary and made it complex and not simple.

Sound
Sound is a key part in reinforcing the emotions of my characters were feeling throughout the film. During my secondary
research i looked a different types of royalty free music that would suit the emotion of my scenes on screen. I wanted to show
the emotions through the sound. I also used diegetic sounds within the scene such as typing on the keyboard and cars
passing i felt this was effective as it shows realism within the my documentary this is also sticks to codes and conventions for
documentaries. in my documentary it realise allot on sound to set the tone of a scene this helps the audience feel for the
character and understand the upset they are going through

Mise en scene
Throughout my film, I have presented mise en scene in a professional way, such as thinking about details in every shoot, and
making sure it fits the scene and what the actor is doing to set the tone of the film and make it most effective for the viewer
when they watch my film, this will allow my film to ruin much smoother. In both my re - enactments I wanted them both to be
in a home environment as I wanted it to seem to the audience that the actors are in a safe environment, however showing
and juxtaposing this and showing the actors not being safe due to social media and the internet and showing how danger this
can be to someone even though they think they are safe at home. Also in the interview in my documentary I wanted this to be
professional, however on my second draft I rushed my interview as one of my actors couldnt make it and filmed it in a
classroom at school this did not look professional and fit in with the mise en scene it looks scruffy and did not look smooth or
fit in with the look I wanted. In my third draft I changed this filmed it in a studio at school this looked very professional as they
has the set up and equipment for me to set up a radio interview this also developed my creativity skills on setting this up. This
was a crucial part to my documentary and after fixing this my documentary looked better and to a high standard.

In my question i asked my target audience how old they was. In this question 91% of the response was
10-20 this shows that my audience is younger this will help me decide on certain aspects of my
documentary such as how to make it appeal to a younger audience maybe by having reenacting scenes
that a younger audience can relate to this will allow my target audience to have more of a connection with
my documentary and allow them to feel a connection with the re-enactments and feel a sense of sorrow
for the actors.
What Have You Learned From Your Audience
Feedback?
In this question i asked my target audience whether they watch a lot of film
within a month. In this question 59% of people said they only watch 1-5 films
this shows that my target audience dont watch very often this helps me to
decided on my documentary and also my poster, as this shows i have to create
a poster that is eye catching for my audience. I think my poster is very gripping
and shows the audience a sneak peek of what my documentary and the tone,
and will intrigue the audience to find out the real harm social media has on
young people today.
In this question i asked my target audience whether they enjoy films 58% of
my target audience said yes and 41% said no this shows that most of my
target audience are interested in films this suggests that they will be able to
compare my documentary to other documentaries they have watched this
will motivate me to make my documentary to very high standard. I think my
documentary is a very high quality standard and i have used a lot of different
shots types and editing to make my documentary stand out from other
documentaries. I also think my audience will learn alot from my documentary
and learn the dangers they can face whilst online. I also mixed up using
codes and conventions of a documentary and my own ideas this will allow
the audience to sit and see something they might not have seen before.
What Have You Learned From Your Audience
Feedback?
In this question i asked where my target audience watches films, my target
audience said they watched films at home on TV and also on Youtube. This
would of helped me gathered where to distrubute my documentary such as
streaming it online or putting it on Youtube. i have put it on Youtube as it will
gather a wider audience to view my documentary this will encourage people to
give me feedback this will help me focus on improving my film. Such as on my
last 3 drafts people have been given me feedback on how to improve this left
me with my final draft. By getting advice this allowed me to think of other
people's views of my film and taking them into account can allow me to improve
and get a better product that people will be more intrigued in.
In this question i asked what type of genre my target audience likes the most
in this question the most popular answers were horror and documentary. This
allowed me to decided on creating a documentary as i was already very
interested in documentaries and felt by me creating a documentary would
show my passion. This also shows my target audience are interested in
documentaries which shows i have a wider audience and a range of people
will want to come see my documentary.
What Have You Learned From Your Audience
Feedback?
In this question i asked my target audience what there thoughts were on
documentaries, most of the comments that my target audience left where
that they find them really engaging and interesting this is what i want for my
audience is to make my documentary interesting so they can take away my
documentary and start standing up to online abuse as it effects alot of people
such as people get depression and anxiety. I want to show the importance of
supporting these illnesses through my documentary by making my
documentary intriguing for my audience and showing this online abuse
through a different way and not by saying but showing the audience different
scenarios and showing how the impact this can have on people's lives and
also people's family and friends to.
Summary of Responses
Lastly, all of the feedback i received on my documentary most of the comments were positive but however some criticized my
documentary and i will take this feedback and improve and do this on my next project so i dodnt make the mistakes i made on
Glamourising Abuse . The purpose of my documentary was to grip the attention of the audience and allow them to understand
the deep issues of today's world and how social media has become a big part of people's lives however online can be
dangerous and can have complication and that online isn't safe at all. i feel that i projected this message through the
documentary i have created and i hope it is effective and people stand up to this issue. i am pleased with all my target audience
responses and will take all of them into inconsideration and this will allow me to gain more confidence when creating another
film.
What Have You Learned From Your Audience
Feedback?
I created a survey monkey, this was a efficent way to gather target audience reseach, this website gave me a
layout of how to set my survey it gave me different layouts and how to set out different questions to get different
types of feedback such as mulitple choice or for the audience to explain why and their thoughts. This was very
beneficial as i posted it on social media and this got over 50 responses for various different people and when i
logged back into survey monkey all my results were gathered and shown in a table format. This really allowed me
to analyse my results and adapat them to my documentary.
I used social media to present and spread my work through the use of classmates, family and friends. I did this by
using Facebook, Youtube. This was share my target audience feedback online as this is using Web 2.0 . I used
Youtube to showcase my Documentary this allowed a wider audience to view my film and give me feedback.
Youtube also allowed me to show my development thorught my A2 course by uploading my drafts and show my
progess.
How Did You Use New Media Technologies In
The Construction And Research, Planning and
Evaluation Stage?
In the planning stages, i used media technologies such as premiere pro to create my anitmatic i found it simple to
create an animatic on this software as i had used it before in my AS project. I created my animatic by drawing my
storyboard by hand and taking pictures of the storyboard bit by bit and then i sent it to my email and imported it
onto premiere pro and put diegetic music on top to make it more effective and to create the atmosphere i wanted. I
think that an animatic and storyboard is very important to planning stages as helps you create what you want by
planning out scenes and describing the sound, mise en scene , camera shots and editing you want to make the
process easy for me and allow me to be time efficient. I showed my development of my planning stages on blogger
and i uploaded each frame of my storyboard onto blogger and i also uploaded my animatic this showed how i
created my final documentary.
How Did You Use New Media Technologies In
The Construction And Research, Planning and
Evaluation Stage?
Before i started A2 had basic knowledge of filming. This is because in AS we all relied on eachother on the aspects
we didnt know and i learnt skills from my peers as i never learnt myself. I had barely any skills of editing and filming,
i feel i have learnt a lot in A2 and developed my skills that i will have for life. As i have learnt to use a Cannon
camera and how to use premiere pro. Also producing my ancillary tasks i used Adobe photoshop on this software it
made my ancillary tasks look very professional, when i first created my film review i used publisher however this
made my film review basic and not look like a professional and very bare. I am very luckily to be able to use this
software and be able to work to my best of my abiltiy using technology such as cannon camera and tripod and also
software such as premiere pro and adobe photoshop really helped me produce a high quaity product.
When editing of my short film, i utilized premiere pro, as i felt this would allow me to have the best outcome and i
have a rough knowledge how to use this from AS. I found the editing very hard and took me a lot of practice such as
watching youtube videos to help me learn how to cut and add text to my documentary. I also found it very hard to
put the overlay on top of the video scene this took me a lot of practice and youtube videos. Also by adding a
transition such aa fade after my shots i found made my documentary look a lot more smoother and made all the
scenes link together. All together Premiere pro helped me put together a high quality and smooth documentary. Also
i will publish my evaluation on scribd where it will become a slideshare this is another way i have used the interent
to showcase my work.
How Did You Use New Media Technologies In
The Construction And Research, Planning and
Evaluation Stage?
I think that i have used new media technologies in all forms effectively to successfully make my own documentary
and my ancillary texts. The most work required with these new media technologies was during the construction of
my media products. Whilst creating my short film and ancillary task i used a wide range of social media and this
allowed me to get a wider audience span and collect a wide range of results. This will allow my product to get
awareness this may allow me to showcase my documentary at short film festivals this would allow me to develop
my skills and get recognition.
