Organization of Comparisons
O There are two patterns of organization
that can be used to write a
compare/contrast essay.
O Block Format: each of the two items being
compared/contrasted gets its own half of
the essay.
O Point-by-Point Format: each point of
comparison gets its own paragraph in the
essay.

O Both of the stories you read for today
deal with issues relating to apartheid
(the strict segregation of the nonwhite
majority from the white majority).
Compare/Contrast the two pieceswhat
tensions are revealed in each piece,
what is the message of each piece as it
relates to apartheid, and what does
each piece say about discrimination,
exile, racism, and poverty?
