Overview and Features of Building

Management System
Seminar Objective

Appreciate the importance of Building Management Systems (BMS).

Get a clear idea of BMS concept.
Understand BMS overall Architecture.
Obtain a good understanding of BMS component.
Our main message is that building controls are key to saving energy
(and hence money) in buildings.
Meter, monitor and manage is a phrase that we use to convey the fact that
end users need controls to fully manage how much energy is used in their
buildings.

BMS
What is BMS?

A micro-processor based system which centralizes and simplifies

controlling
monitoring
operation and
management
of heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, Electrical & other building services to
achieve
safe and comfortable working environment
energy saving & efficient operation
at reduced time & cost
What Are the Benefits of a BMS?
Buildings equipped with BMS tend to be more energy efficient than
structures without such a system in place.
BMS can be set to adjust the lighting systems and heating and cooling
equipment when the building is unoccupied.
BMS lowering energy costs. This can also help to qualify a building for
EPA Energy Star or LEED certification.
BMS can notify building managers and maintenance staff of any potential
problems or failures in the system, allowing them to react immediately
and appropriately to the situation.

.
What Are the Benefits of a BMS?
BMS does much of the work, with the building manager only attending to
the main control room, maintenance costs are lowered as well.
BMS takes care of much of the difficulty of controlling the environmental
systems of a building while at the same time lowering energy and
maintenance costs.
Problems are constantly monitored, and feedback is provided so issues
can be addressed as they arise. For these reasons, installing a BMS in a
new structure or updating a system in an older building is a worthwhile
investment

BMS protocol Type
Protocols are languages by which two devices communicate and exchange data
The four key aspects to protocol are:

Open when the creator of the protocol makes it readily available to

everyone
Standard all parties to agree on a data structure that can be implemented
on their respective devices.
Inter-operable controller from one vendor can be replaced with a controller
from a different vendor
Proprietary make the protocols restricted to the creator of the device by not
sharing the data structure.
