Beginning of the Nurse
Profession
Nursing was first recorded around 300 A.D.
They placed hospitals in every town
Nurses helped patients with medical care
Helped pushed nursing on a global scale
Nursing became popular in Europe in the middle ages,
because it was spread by Catholic Church
Nursing in the Middle Ages
Nursing industry was still based on Religion
Between 500's to 600's, the first Spanish hospital was
created in Merida, Spain. They were supplied by the
Catholic church.
Emperor Charlemagne came to a decision to restore and
equip with the latest medical equipment. Demanded
hospitals should be attached every cathedral and
monastery within Europe
Nursing expanded at 10th and 11th century.
Nursing in the Middle Ages cont...
Outside of general health care services(Nurses had to
fulfill patient needs.) it became popular.
Churches had to have hospitals
Germany had crafted 150 hospitals between the years
of 1200 and 1600 expanding the role of nurses.
The mid 1000's also saw a rise in charitable houses.
This type of healthcare facility was different from
churches and monastries. Because in a larger part
provided richer customers and other medicine.
Florence Nightingale and Intro to
Modern Nursing
Nightingale helped change the profession of nursing.
Nightingale started her nursing career in the Crimean
War by helping the injured soldiers on the battlefield
(1850)
Death from injuries were common because of the lack of
hygiene and fatal infection.
Nightingale asked for assistance from the British
government with hygiene, which decreased the date
rates for a while.
Modern Nursing in Europe
Nightingale opened the first nursing school in London. (1860)
Which built more nursing schools, helped with training and
education on the field.
Clarissa Harlowe found the American Red Cross after the civil war.
Germany brought back what was known as a Deaconess(a nurse
that is in charge of providing healthcare for other women).Also
found in U.S and Canada
In France nursing was still contributed around a religion, 1,500
hospital and 10,000 were Catholic nuns
In 20th century, the government moved it out of the religion and
so the patients were cared better

The first world war was a big job for the nurses. After
the war, many nurses left because they were untrained.
Nurses became more involved with war because of the
Crimean War.(Military Hospitals)
And still the nurses were still untrained about the
profession and how to deal with the condition in the war
Then they realized that nurses needed training and
better understanding of the equipment and even the
equipment needed to be developed

Nurses inU.S was different than from other countries
Nurses wasnt really full of nuns in America
Beginned in 1700's, first almshouse was opened in
Philadelphia.
Many hospitals were created throughout America in the
next two centuries, because of the diseases.
They didnt had the funds to train nurses.
The job of a nurse was not that big back then, there job was
mostly like a certified nurse assistant job, to help out the
elders and flu.

Most of them were in the civil war and then joining the Red

Not until the 20th century nurses progress started to grow,
which one of the reason was because of nursing schools
In 1990, Schools became controlled by hospitals, which
helped out with more hand-on project. Before the schools
were controlled by hospital they only learnt through books.
Nurses were mostly women and around 1920 about 294,000
nurses were trained.
Nursing starting to help more poor people in the rural areas.
Post WWI Nursing in Europe and U.S.
Nursing modernized a little bit more after WWI and getting into
WWII
WWII got the government to provide more support for the nurses.
Nurses were in the same horrifying condition as the soldiers
Nursing became just as popular as it is today in U.S because of
the WWII.
Because many nurses were called heroes which made many
people volunteer.
The nurses that volunteer weren't trained before going but they
got training while overseas.

After the war, they knew enough about the profession.
Technology increased the medical innovation.
In 1950 and 1970's you were able to get your RN and
MSN and even doctorate degree.
An American Journal of Nursing helped nurses and
doctors stay up to date.
The 20th century gave more jobs to nurses and roles to
nurses.
Common Nursing Jobs in the Current Industry and
the Educational Requirement of Nursing Today
Nursing has went from a job full of Nuns to a more
diverse career
Nursing in general focuses on caring for people but
there are so many different duties.
Nursing has grown and is continuing to grow as life goes
on.
You can now get different degrees of nursing now and
focus on different duties.
