in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. Reserves
are estimated at 12 billion tons.

In 2003 the country produced 3,500,638 t of manganese

ore.

 Samancor
>S.Africa: operates two mines, Mamatwan (opencast) and Wessels
(underground) near Hotazel of Northern Cape, have a combined
annual capacity of 3,4 million tonnes of ore which includes 1,1 million
tonnes used for sinter production. 40% of production is exported to
ferroalloy producers, whilst the remainder is converted to alloys and
manganese metal (which is then exported)

>Australia: GEMCO Mn mine in Groote Eylandt, in the Gulf of

Carpentaria in the vast Northern Territory of Australia. GEMCO has a
production capacity of 2,4 million tonnes per annum.
