GREETINGS.

HELLO BYE
Lets start with some simple greetings:

How do we break up the day in Spain ?.

In Spain we only break up the day into three

parts:

Morning, Afternoon, Night.

Up to Up to From 8 or
1.00pm 8.00pm 9.00pm till next
morning
Buenos das
Buenas tardes
Buenas noches
Introducing oneself and
someone else

Whats different between Spanish and

English?

Different expressions and two ways of

saying YOU depending on whether we
have a formal USTED or informal
TU conversation.
Situation:
You arrive at the company, based in the foreign
country, and someone comes to welcome you.
The following slides will present you with the
correct expressions to use in a formal context
(business) .

Hello, Welcome, Pleased to meet you,

its a pleasure.
HOLA !

BIENVENIDO ! /a
Mucho gusto

Encantado/a
Have you noticed the different
ending (o/a) ?:

Nouns in Spanish have a gender -masculine

\feminine-.

The rule (90%) could be that a noun ending in A

is feminine, otherwise is masculine.

Therefore, if we greet to a woman, well say

Encantada, o Bienvenida.
Look at these flashcards and work in pairs. One partner points to a
flashcard and the other pronounce correctly. Then, the other partner
pronounce a greeting and his/her colleague has to point to the correct
flashcard. Award points for correct answers.
Now, prepare a short conversation using the following flashcards. You
will refer to the time of the day and welcome and greet a visitor to your
company.
Now,stand up and practise that short
conversation with a male and female
colleague.

Pay attention to the different ending

depending on the gender of your colleague.
Lets see when a third party introduces us
to another person.

Le presento
When one person is introduced to me.

Les presento
When one person is introduced to a group.
Have you noticed the difference betwee a
Formal & Informal introduction ?.

Le presento / Te presento

Les presento / Os presento

In the next two slides you look at different

expressions, some + /- formal.
Activity:
Think of a situation, eg a salesman arriving to
a branch of the firm in another city, and you
are introduced to the manager.

In groups of three, prepare an script using the

expressions from the previous two slides.

Remember you are in a business situation.

Eg: Le presento al Seor Martinez. Me alegro de
conocerle. Igualmente.
A social aspect:

Hand shaking : in a business situation no

kisses but just a hand shake.

When people knows to each other, and

between man and womad, two kisses.
Saying Bye
Three expressions that we can use:

Bye .
See you later.

See you tomorrow.

See you next .

hasta
adis
luego

hasta
maana

hasta el prximo .
Hasta el prximo

What day is today?

Today is .........
Look at the question and answer in
English.
Look for the pattern that is followed.
Now, apply the same logical to the
question and answer in Spanish.
Qu da es hoy?
.

Lunes Jueves

Martes Viernes Domingo

Mircoles Sbado
Activity:
Write one day of the week on a small piece of
paper, dont let the others see what youve
got.

Qu da es
One starts with the question
hoy? Hoy es ?.
Your colleague needs to guess what card you
have got.

Right guess, you get the card, wrong guess

the other students turn.
2nd Activity:
Go back to your first scrip with
greetings and introduce a bye
expression.
Again, perform with a male and female
colleague.
3rd Activity:
Think of an activity or image you can
associate to each day of the week. In
pairs, play a guessing game.
Use the expressions learnt to fill in the speech bubbles.
Cultural Awareness:
Interrogation and exclamation symbols:

An upside down symbol of interrogation

is used at the beginning of the question
(..?).

The same for an exclamation symbol

( !).
Tu
Yo
Usted ?
Which expression will be used in a business situation ?,
What does it mean ?
The next four slides introduce the
expressions:

Mr. (surname) Mrs. (surname)

Im Mr.
Im Mrs. ..

Remember about the gender ?. Now, again, we need

to look at the different ending depending on whether
we mean Mr or Mrs. Also, look at the article in front,
that also changes depending again on the gender.
El seor Martnez
La seora Ramrez
Soy
el seor Martnez
Soy
la seora Ramrez
Soy el seor Martnez
Y usted?
Soy la seora Ramrez
Do you guess the meaning of Y usted ?
Write down your answer:
.

what does it means SOY ?

Write down your answer:

FILL IN THE GAPS
And act out the dialogue

Buenos .., bienvenido. Soy Martnez.
