This Australian WW1 example of propaganda show a


rather fierce looking caricature of Kaiser Wilhelm II
standing over a globe with his hand raised above

country. This poster taps into the emotions of fear
through the image of the Kaiser and his grab at
Australia and through the rhetorical question, must it
come to this? It would also tap into a sense of national
pride and nationalism in people to protect Australia by
enlisting. This poster would have made the treat of a
German invasion a more visible and possible reality and
would have encouraged men to enlist.

and the subsequent shadow which falls over her
sunburnt country illustrates to the public the possible
reach of the German army and the effect it would have;

top of the poster making it clear to understand and
leaves the viewer accountable for the security and
future safety of Australia. In contrast, enlist is
presented in a much more attractive, jaunty font which
implies that this option is the proactive thing to do.

point. The fact it has been positioned on an diagonal is
