Road Development Authority

Road Development Authority is the major institute in Sri Lanka whos responsible for the development and
maintenance of the national highway network.
Its responsible for maintaining class A & B roads.

Class "A" Roads 221.37 km
Class "AA" Roads 3724.26 km
Class "AB" Roads 466.92 km
Class "AC " Roads 30.19 km
Class "B" Roads 7,943.65 km
Total of "A" & "B" C lass Roads in Sri Lanka 12,165.02 km
Role of RDA in various projects
Guide the construction (Consultancy role).

Planning and design.

Carry out feasibility studies of improvement.

Proper maintenance and improvement.

Carry out the quality control tests.

Research and development of low cost, but efficient technologies and material.
Training Experiences (Technical)
There were many ongoing construction projects covering both road and bridge sectors under the consultancy
of Chief Engineers office. Therefore I got the opportunity to deal with various different stages of those
projects. Those projects can be categorized as follows.

Steel and Concrete Bridge construction projects of different areas.

Road construction projects.
Land slide protection projects.
Road maintenance work and also few days in material engineering office (Laboratory of Chief Engineers
office).

The landslide disaster protection project

During my training period I got the opportunity to engage with the land slide protection project (A016-010-Rank-C) in
Kahagalla area. This project was a joint venture project with the consultancy of Oriental consultant, CEA and RDA. Funds
had been provided by JAICA and the contractor for this project was NBRO (National Building Research Organization).
