INTRODUCTION :
ANA has established standards for psychiatric
mental health nursing practice.
The standards of Psychiatric nursing describe, in
broad terms, the expected level of performance of
all registered Psychiatric Nurses.
These standards of care represent the nursing
professions commitment to the general public.
It is important that nurses know their practice
standards & are able to practice at this level.
DEFINITION :
Standard means a level of quality, achievement
etc. That is considered acceptable or desirable.
Something set up and established by authority as
a rule for measure of quantity, weight, extent,
value or quality.

STANDARDS OF PRACTICE:
1. . Assessment:
The psychiatric- mental health
registered nurse collects comprehensive health data
that are relating directly to the patients health or
situation.

. Rational: The psychiatric mental health registered


nurse uses effective communication skills,
interviewing, behavioural observation, record review
& comprehensive assessment & collection of
information to make sound clinical assessments
2. Diagnosis:
The psychiatric- mental health
registered nurse analyse the assessment data to
determine diagnoses or problems, including level of
risk.
Rational: Through comprehensive & focused
assessment & data analysis the psychiatric
mental health registered nurse identifies patient
needs related to actual or potential psychiatric
disorders, & mental health problems.
3. Outcome Identification:
The psychiatric- mental health
registered nurse identifies expected outcome for a
plan individualized to the patient or the situation.
Rational: Psychiatric mental health registered
nurses provide nursing care to influence positive
patient outcomes including the achievement of
individualized mental & physical health goals.
4. Planning:
The psychiatric mental health
registered nurse develops a plan that prescribes
strategies and alternatives to attain expected
outcomes.
Rational: A plan of care is used to
systematically guide therapeutic interventions
and document progress.
5. Implementation:
The psychiatric- mental health
registered nurse implements the identified plan.

Rational: Psychiatric/mental health nurses use


a wide range of interventions designed to prevent
mental & physical illness & promote, maintain, &
restore mental & physical health.
SUB STANDARDS:
o 5.1. Coordination of care Counselling:
o Psychiatric nurse coordinates care delivery.
o 5.2. Health Teaching & Health Promotion:
o The psychiatric registered nurse, through health
teaching, promotes the patients personal & social
integration & assists the patient in achieving
satisfying, productive, and health patterns of
living.
o 5.3. Milieu Therapy:
o The psychiatric registered nurse provides,
structures, & maintains a safe & therapeutic
environment in collaboration with the patients,
families and other health care clinicians.
o 5.4. Pharmacological, Biological and
Integrative Therapies:
o The psychiatric-mental registered nurse uses
knowledge of pharmacological, biological &
complementary interventions & applies clinical
skills to restore the patients health and prevent
further disability.
o 5.5. Prescriptive Authority & Treatment:
o The APRN-PMH prescribes or recommends
pharmacological agents for patients with mental
health problems and psychiatric disorders based on
individual characteristics, such as culture,
ethnicity, gender, religious beliefs, age and physical
health problems.
o 5.6. Psychotherapy:
o The Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced
Practice Registered Nurse conducts individual,
couples, group, and/or family psychotherapy
using evidence-based psychotherapeutic
frameworks, interpersonal transactions and
nurse-patient therapeutic relationship.
o 5.7. consultation:
o The psychiatric mental health advanced practice
nurse provides consultation to influence the
identified plan, enhance the abilities of other
clinicians to provide services for patients and
effect change.
6. Evaluation:
The psychiatric-mental health
registered nurse evaluates progress toward
attainment of expected outcome.
Rational: In order to fulfil the task of evaluation
by nurses, it is essential to provide scope for
immediate feedback of her/his nursing
interventions & participation in bedside rounds
& nursing conferences.
STANDARDS OF PROFESSIONAL
PERFORMANCE:
1. Quality of Practice:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse systematically evaluates the quality &
effectiveness of nursing practice.
2. Education:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse attains knowledge & competency that reflect
current nursing practice.
3. Professional Practice Evaluation:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse evaluates ones own practice in relation to the
professional practice standards & guidelines, relevant
statutes, rules & regulations.
4. Collegiality:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse interacts with & contributes to the
professional development of peers & colleagues.
5. Collaboration:
The psychiatric-mental health nurse
collaborates with patients, family & others in the
conduct of nursing practice.
6. ETHICS
The psychiatric mental health registered
nurse integrates ethical provisions in all areas of
practice
7. Research:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse integrates research findings into practice.
8. Resource Utilization:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse considers factors related to safety,
effectiveness, cost & impact on practice in the
planning & delivery of nursing services.
9. Leadership:
The psychiatric-mental health registered
nurse provides leadership in the professional
practice setting & the profession.
Summary:
Today we learnt regarding definition of
standards, standards of practice and standards of
professional performance of psychiatric nursing.
Conclusion:

Standards of psychiatric nursing are


more important for care of psychiatric patient. It
helps to promotion and prevention of mental illness
so knowledge regarding standards of psychiatric
nursing is very important to promote optimum
health of mental patient.
