Myths, Traditions
and Realities
Leadership

Myth: Leaders ought to be cool, aloof and analytical;

they ought to separate emotion from work.

Reality: Leaders describe feelings of inspiration, passion,

elation, intensity, challenge, caring and
kindness-and yes, even love.

Myth: Leaders are charismatic, they possess some

special gift.

Reality: Leaders must be energetic and enthusiastic, but a

leaders dynamism doesnt come from special
powers. It comes from a strong belief in a purpose
and a willingness to express that conviction.
Leadership

Myth: It is lonely at the top

Reality: The most effective leaders are involved and in

touch with those they lead. They care deeply
about others, and they often refer to those with
whom they work as family.

Myth: Leadership is reserved for only a very few of

us. Leaders are born leaders.

Reality: Leadership is an observable, learnable set of

practices. Leadership is everyones business.

Lessons
From the
Geese
Leadership
Have you ever wondered why
migrating geese fly in a V
formation?
Leadership
As each bird flaps its wings, it
creates uplift for the bird following.

In a V formation, the whole flock

adds at least 71% more flying
range than if each bird flew alone.
Leadership
Whenever a goose falls out of
formation, it suddenly feels the drag
and resistance of trying to fly
alone

and quickly gets back into formation.

Leadership
Like geese

people who share a common direction

and sense of community can get where
they are going quicker and easier than
those who try to go it alone.
Leadership

When a lead goose gets tired,

it rotates back into the
formation and another goose
flies at the head.
Shared leadership and
interdependence give us each
a chance to lead as well as an
opportunity to rest
Leadership

Geese in the rear of the formation honk to

encourage those up front to keep up their
speed.
It is important that our honking from
behind be encouraging.
ECOURAGEMENT IS MOTIVATING.
When a goose gets sickLeadership
or wounded, two other
geese drop out of formation and follow it down
to help and provide protection.

They stay with the unhealthy member of the

flock until it is either able to fly again or dies.
Leadership

Then they launch out again with

another passing flock or try to
catch up with their own.

May we be so sacrificial, that

we may be worthy of such
friends in our time of need.
Leadership

We may all need help from time to

time.
We should stand by our colleagues
In difficult times.

Leadership is the courage to
