DEFINITION OF TERMS
Gestational age
is the period of time between
conception and birth during which
the fetus grows and develops
inside the mother's womb.
the time measured from the first
day of the woman's last menstrual
cycle to the current date. It is
measured in weeks.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
SMALL FOR
GESTATIONAL AGE (SGA)
fetus or infant is smaller in
size than normal for the
baby's gender and
gestational age.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
APPROPRIATE FOR
GESTATIONAL AGE (AGA)
a fetus or newborn infant
whose size is within the
normal range for his or her
gestational age.
DEFINITION OF TERMS
LARGE FOR
GESTATIONAL AGE (LGA)
a fetus or infant is larger or
more developed than
normal for the baby's
gestational age.
DUBOWITZ SCORING
SYSTEM-ballards score
Provides a score of
neuromuscular and physical
maturity that can be
mathematically extrapolated
onto a corresponding age
scale to reveal the
gestational age in weeks.
Performed by the nurse
for the first 12 hours of
life and is more accurate
when done on term
infants between 10 and
36 hours of life.
