Introduction
An Antenna converts electromagnetic radiation into electric current, or
vice versa.
Need of Antenna :
For transmission and reception of the radio signal.
Antennas are required by any radio receiver or transmitter to couple its
electrical connection to the electromagnetic field.
Electromagnetic waves carry signals through the air (or through space)
at the speed of light with almost no transmission loss.
Wireless performance is completely dependent on a high performance
antenna design and implementation.

Antennas for wireless communication
In today world of wireless communications, there has been an increasing
need for more compact and portable communications systems.
One has to make some kind of compromise among volume, impedance
bandwidth and radiation characteristics of an antenna while making the
smallest possible antenna.
Antenna used in wireless communication supporting several frequency bands
can have one of the following structure :
Single band Antenna
Dual band Antenna
Multiband Antenna
Antennas for wireless communication
(Contd.)
Following are main types of antennas used for wireless communication:

External Antennas

Monopoles (whips)

Helical

Internal Antennas

Microstrip antennas (MSA)

Planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA)

Antenna Patch

Ground plane
Microstrip Antenna
o In its most basic form, a Microstrip patch antenna consists of a radiating patch on
one side of a dielectric substrate which has a ground plane on the other side.
Basic Principle

The patch acts approximately as a resonant cavity (short circuit walls on top
and bottom, open-circuit walls on the sides).
If the antenna is excited at a resonant frequency, a strong field is set up
inside the cavity, and a strong current on the surface of the patch. This
produces significant radiation.
Feeding Techniques
1 Microstrip Line feeding
2 Coaxial Probe feeding
3 Aperture Coupled feeding
4 Proximate Coupled feeding
5 CPW feeding
The Coaxial feed or probe feed is a very common

Technique used for feeding Microstrip patch antennas.

The center conductor of the coaxial connecter is

soldered to the patch.

Advantages:
1.Easy to fabricate and match.
2.Low spurious radiation.

Inferences Drawn

Now-a-days more and more radios are being integrated into single wireless
platform to allow maximum connectivity and ever increasing need of having
several functionalities in devices.
Multiband antenna approach using Patch structure results in size reduction,
enhanced bandwidth coverage and good gain. These can be achieved by
employing several techniques to modify the basic structure and using ground
plane to support the main patch.
Patch antenna is also good choice to be used for wireless applications such as
satellite communication, antennas small in size with good isolation are required.

Problem Definition

Single-band antenna supports only one or two frequencies of wireless service. And these
days more & more wireless standards are being supported by the devices. So they
employ several antennas for each standard.
This leads to large space requirement in wireless devices.
Thus, due to space constraints in wireless devices, covering multiple bands with a single
antenna structure is the need of the hour.
Therefore, the thesis work is directed to make a multiband antenna and it can be achieved
by using low profile antenna structures like patch with additional features to enhance the
bandwidth coverage and other important performance parameters.

Conclusion

There are few conclusions that can be drawn from this thesis work:
An X-band patch antenna with reduced size and improved gain has been
designed.
Simulation results indicate that all the parameters of the proposed Microstrip patch
antenna has considerably been improved by using slots on both ground plane and
top patch.
This Patch antenna covers impedance bandwidth of 2.47 GHz in X band frequency
range
Average peak gain is 7.92 dB which is considered to be good for X band
applications.
There is 70 % overall size reduction as compared to already implemented design.
