MOLARITY
Another way of expressing concentration, is
called Molarity.
Molarity is the number of moles of solute
dissolved in one litre of solution.
Rather than writing out moles per litre, these
units are abbreviated as M or M.
FORMULA FOR MOLARITY
moles of solute
M
litre of solution
THOU SHANT FORGET
Formula on how to get the Molarity
How to convert L to mL
Given:
160 g of NaOH = mass of solute
300 mL = volume of solution
Missing:
? = Molarity of the solution
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE #1
1. Convert 160 g of NaOH to moles.
1 mole of NaOH = 40 g of NaOH
1 mol of NaOH
160 g NaOH 4 mol of NaOH
40 g of NaOH
1L
300 mL 0.3 L
1000 mL
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE #1
3. Substitute to the formula.
Given:
3 M = Molarity
600 mL = volume of solution
Missing:
? = Mass of NaCl
SOLUTION TO EXAMPLE #2
1. Covert three moles of NaCl to grams.
1 mole of NaCl = 58 g of NaCl
58 g of NaCl
3 mol of NaCl 174 g of NaCl
1 mol of NaCl
2. Since there are 174 g of NaCl in a 1 L solution, find the
mass of NaCl in a 600 mL solution.
174 g of NaCl
600 mL 104.4 g of NaCl
1000 mL
EXERCISE
1. What is the molarity of a solution prepared by
dissolving 15.0 g of sodium hydroxide in enough
water to make a total of 225 mL of solution?
3. 27.84 g of NaCl
