by Stuart Hall By Alannah Flood The audience reception theory suggest that;
When a producer makes a film or TV show there is a message
or underline meaning that the producer is attempting to showcase to the audience. Generally the audience pick up on this meaning and understand the production and sometimes they dont understand what the message is trying to convey. In this case the audience will disregard or fail to understand it. Decoding (3) Dominant or Preferred Reading
According to Hall there are three ways audiences read or
decode films and/or TV shows. This first reading type is Dominant or preferred; When the audience understands the the message the way the producer wants them to and then agrees with the message; e.g. watching a political speech and agreeing with it. Negotiated Reading Is when the audience comes to terms with the TV drama or political speech. By neither agreeing or disagreeing with it. You could also say that it is when the audience partly agrees and partly disagrees. For example you may not fully agree with a specific meaning or opinion that one character has made, on the other hand you may agree with another characters opinion or cause. Oppositional Reading When the audience recognizes the the meaning or message in the speech or tv show and rejects or disagrees with it. An example of this is president trump, you may recognize what he says about building a wall between the boarder of the U.S and Mexico however you may not agree.
