HAZARDOUS ENERGIES
LOCKOUT AND TAGOUT
HAZARDOUS ENERGY
The energy stored that if released may cause a serious
accident or physical damage
defined by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA)
as: any electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, chemical,
nuclear, thermal, gravitational, or other energy that can
harm people
Some energy sources are obvious, such as electricity, heat
in a furnace, or something that might fall. Others may be
hidden hazards such as air pressure in a system or a tightly
wound spring
CONTROL OF HAZARDOUS ENERGIES
Purpose:
- To ensure person who work on or around
hazardous energy sources are aware of controls
to prevent injury or accidents.

Physical hazards flying particles
LOCKOUT - TAGOUT
Lockout The placement of a lockout device on an energy
isolation device. This ensures that the energy isolating
device and the systems it controls cannot be accidentally
operated
Tagout- the place of a tagout device on an energy isolation
device to indicate that the isolation device and the system
being controlled may not be operated until the tagout
device is removed.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
Abandoned locks
Change of shift
Multiple workers
