CHAPTER 3: VECTORS

Mr. David Ramos

PRACTICE:
1.-
PRACTICE:
2.-An airplane flies 200 km due west from city A to city B and then 300 km in the
direction 30.0 north of west from city B to city C. (a) In straight-line distance, how far
is city C from city A? (b) Relative to city A, in what direction is city C?
PRACTICE:
2.-A hiker begins a trip by first walking 25.0 km southeast from her car. She stops
and sets up her tent for the night. On the second day, she walks 40.0 km in a direction
60.0 north of east, at which point she discovers a forest rangers tower.
a) Determine the components of the hikers displacement for each day.
b) Determine the magnitude and direction of the total displacement.
PRACTICE:
2.-
1)The record for the longest nonstop closed-circuit flight by a model airplane was set in Italy in
1986. The plane flew a total distance of 1239 km. Assume that at some point the plane traveled
1.25 10^`3 m to the east, then 1.25 10^3 m to the north, and finally 1.00 10^3 m to
the southeast. Calculate the total displacement for this portion of the flight.
2) A commuter airplane takes the route shown in Figure 3.20. First, it flies from the origin of the
coordinate system shown to city A, located 175 km in a direction 30.0 north of east. Next, it
flies 153 km 20.0 west of north to city B. Finally, it flies 195 km due west to city C. Find the
location of city C relative to the origin.

Practice:
A long jumper (see the figure) leaves the ground at an angle of
20.0 above the horizontal and at a speed of 11.0 m/s.
How far does he jump in the horizontal direction?
Practice:
In a movie production, a stunt person must leap from a
balcony of one building to a balcony 3.0 m lower on another
building. If the buildings are 2.0 m apart, what is the minimum
horizontal velocity the stunt person must have to accomplish
the jump? Assume no air resistance and that ay =9.81 m/s^2
.
.
A long-jumper leaves the ground at an angle of 20.0 above the horizontal and at a
speed of 11.0 m/s.
(a) How far does he jump in the horizontal direction?
(b) What is the maximum height reached?
.
A ball 200 N hangs from a rope attached to two other strings,
as shown in the figure. Find the tension in the strings A and B.
Find the tension in the strings A and B in the device shown in
the figure.
A traffic light weighing 125 N hangs from a cable tied to two other cables
fastened to a support. The upper cables make angles of 37.0 and 53.0 with
the horizontal. Find the tension in the three cables.
The coefficient of friction
A student attaches a rope to a 20.0 kg box of books. She pulls with a force
of 90.0 N at an angle of 30.0 with the horizontal. The coefficient of
kinetic friction between the box and the sidewalk is 0.500. Find the
acceleration of the box.
A woman at an airport is towing her 20.0-kg suitcase at constant speed by
pulling on a strap at an angle of 25 above the horizontal She pulls on the strap
with a 75.0 N force, and the coefficient of friction between the suitcase and the
floor is 0.400.
(a)Draw a free-body diagram for the suitcase.
(b)What normal force does the ground exert on the suitcase?
(c)Find the acceleration of the suitcase.
A 4.0 kg block is pushed along the ceiling with a constant applied force of
85.0 N that acts at an angle of 55 with the horizontal as in the figure. The
box accelerates to the right a 6.00 m/s2.
Determine the coefficient of kinetic friction between the block and the
ceiling.
The coefficient of friction between the 3.00 kg crate and the 35
inclined plane is 0.30.what is the magnitude of the minimum
force F that must be applied to the crate perpendicular to the
incline to prevent the crate sliding down the incline.
Find the tension in the strings A and B in the system shown in the figure.
