IUDs are one of the best ways to prevent pregnancy. These are temporary treatments
and the most convenient emergency birth control method. Its effectiveness is even 5
days after an unprotected sexual intercourse. You can get it, forget it, and still be
protected.
1. Types of IUDs
a) Hormonal IUD.-The hormonal IUD releases levonorgestrel, which is a form of the
hormone called progestin. The hormonal IUD appears has slightly more effectiveness
at preventing pregnancy than the copper IUD. Hormonal IUDs prevent pregnancy for
3 to 5 years, depending on the type of IUD being used.
b) Copper IUD- The most commonly used IUD is the Copper IUD. It is T-shaped plastic
device covered with bits of copper. The sperm cannot reach an egg because of the
copper insertion in the vaginal cavity. The copper IUD can stay in place for up to 10
years and is a highly effective form of contraception.
2. Functions of IUDs
These IUDs have high effectiveness on birth control. Both types of IUD prevent
fertilization of the egg by damaging or killing sperm. The Inter uterine device or
IUDs also affects the uterine lining (where a fertilized egg would implant and
grow). Both the IUDs have different functioning to prevent pregnancy.

Hormonal IUD. This IUD prevents fertilization by damaging or killing sperm. The
hormone present in the IUD turns the mucus in the cervix thick and sticky due
to which the sperm can't get through the uterus. This makes the uterus lining a
poor place for a fertilized egg to implant and grow. This prevents pregnancy.
Moreover,The hormones in this IUD also reduce
menstrual bleeding and cramping.

Copper IUD- Copper is toxic to sperm. It makes the uterus and fallopian tubes
produce fluid that kills sperm. This fluid contains white blood cells, copper ions,
enzymes, and prostaglandins. This IUD, sometimes, deviates the path of sperm
and prevents it from meeting the egg. This prevents fertilization and helps in
controlling pregnancy.
3) Right time to have IUDs
You can have an Copper IUD inserted at any time, as long as you are not
pregnant and you don't have a pelvic infection. An IUD is inserted into your
uterus by your doctor. IUD insertion is easiest in women who have had avaginal
childbirth in the past.
The copper insertion procedure takes only a few minutes and can be done in a
doctor's office. Sometimes a local anesthetic is injected into the area around
the cervix, but this is not always needed.Your doctor may have you feel for the
IUD string right after copperinsertion, to be sure you know what it feels like.
4) Removing an IUD
IUD depending on its type lasts upto 5-7 years. However, in case you are
planning a baby before this period, you can get it removed earlier. You should
not try to remove IUD at home and need to take help of medical professional
who will remove the IUD with certain medical device for your safety.
5) Benefits of IUDs
As recommended by Dr. Richika Sahay Shukla of India IVF Centre Hormonal IUD has
following benefits
Reduces heavy menstrual bleeding by an average of 90% after the first few months of
use.
Reduces menstrual bleeding and cramps and, in many women, eventually causes
menstrual periods to stop altogether. In this case, not menstruating is not harmful.
May prevent endometrial hyperplasia or endometrial cancer.
May effectively relieve endometriosis and is less likely to cause side effects than high-
dose progestin.
Reduces the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
Does not cause weight gain
6) Side effects of IUD
a) Menstrual cramp- IUDs may introduce you to the risk of menstrual cramps or
spotting from time to time if care is not taken properly.
b) Risk of perforation-IUDs pose the risk of perforation where the IUD gets stuck in the
uterus, which can severely abuse uterus lining and overall uterus health.
c) Risk of expulsion- Many women report - pushing out of IUD just after insertion.
However it has been seen that such things happen when IUDs have not been inserted
properly.
d) IUD leads to uncomfortable sex-There are cases where men complain about
uneasiness during sex with a woman using an IUD.
7) Risks of IUDs
a) Hormonal IUDs at times can lead to growth of ovarian cysts, breast tenderness, mood
swings, tenderness/numbness in breasts, acne etc.
b) In some cases, as suggested by Dr. Anushka Madan Mehra of Femme Care Clinic that
Copper IUDs such as copper t may lead to many infections in the uterus like swelling of
the ovaries, irregular period, accidental spotting, severe menstrual cramps etc.
