BIRTH
My name is Joaquim Aurlio
Barreto Nabuco de Arajo.
I was born in Recife, on August
19, 1849(National historian day);
Senator Jos Tomas Nabuco de
Arajo and Ana Benigna Barreto

STUDY BACKGROUND
Studied humanities at the Pedro
II school, later becoming a bachelor
in letters;
In 1865 (16 yo), I went to So
Paulo, where I studied the first
three years of law;
Graduated in Recife, in 1870 (21
yo).
THE DIPLOMATA
I joined the diplomatic service very young,
from 1876 to 1879 (27-30 yo);
Afterwards, I would eventually be drawn
into the political field;
During this period, people was presented
to Nabuco militant of the slavery abolition
campaign;
I and Ruy Barbosa assumed a prominent
position in the fight for religious freedom in
Brazil that, at the time, had a Catholic
religion as an official.
THE POLITICIAN
In 1883 (34 yo) , my main work
called Abolitionism, was
released in London;
On my return to the country, I
was again elected deputy for
Pernambuco, assuming the front
line of the abolitionist campaign;
THE JORNALIST
In 1889 (40 yo), I reaffirms my fidelity
to the monarchist regime, despite the
divergence in the slave question.
Since the proclamation of the
Republic, I abandon public life to devote
myself only to studies and my works.
I start to live permanently resident in
Rio de Janeiro, practicing law and
journalism.
THE POET
When I was living in Rio, I have
made close friendship with
important people of the Brazilian
letters, as for example Machado de
Assis, Jos Verssimo and Lcio de
Mendona.
Such contacts would later inspire
the creation of the Brazilian
Academy of Letters in 1897.
THE JURIST
In 1900 (51 yo) the then President Campos
Salles invited me to the extraordinary envoy
position and plenipotentiary minister on a
special mission in London;
There was discussed the question of
territorial limits with the United Kingdom,
territory now located between the Brazilian
state of Roraima and the sovereign nation of
Guiana.
In 1906 (57 yo), I returned to Rio to preside
over the III Pan American Conference.
DEATH
On January 17, 1910 (61 yo), I died in
Washington, victim of cerebral congestion.
I had great prestige among the American
authorities.
When I died in Washington, My body was
solemnly taken to the cemetery of the
American capital, and then transferred to
Brazil.
It was honored with street and square
name.
In 1949 the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation
was created, with the objective of
preserving my historical legacy.
True patriotism is
one that conciliates
the homeland with
humanity.
