Amul was established in 1946 in India to give farmers a fair price for their milk and counter monopolies. It was founded based on the vision of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr. Verghese Kurien to organize milk producers' cooperatives. Amul began with two societies collecting 250 liters per day and grew, establishing plants for milk powder and baby food production to compete with other companies. The Amul model of dairy cooperatives was then replicated across India through the National Dairy Development Board.
