Sharklets Installed on Test Aircraft MSN 001

First Flight 30th November 2011

Sharklets Increase Savings

Sharklets Delivering up to 4% Fuel Burn Saving

Sharklet Increase Revenue Potential
Sharklets Improve Take-Off Performance

If facing obstacles or climb limitations, Sharklets will increase take-off

weight by:

Improving second segment performance

Clearing more obstacles

Operational efficiency for each flight cycle

Improved Optimum Altitudes With Sharklets

Higher initial cruise altitude

Sharklets and Provisions Ramp-Up

From Q1 2014, every A320 Family delivery can benefit from Sharklets
Why Have Sharklets

Made of lightweight composite materials,

the 2.44 meter-tall Sharklets improve the
A320s aerodynamics, which in turn reduces
fuel consumption and emissions, resulting in
fuel savings of up to four per cent.

The wing-tip devices also:

enhances take-off performance
raises optimum flight altitude
delivers an improved rate-of-climb, and
lowers engine maintenance costs
Progressive Assessment
Please answer the question by circling the correct response on your answer sheet

Question No. 1
What are the claimed advantages of Sharklets apart from
improved aerodynamics, take-off performance and raise the
optimum altitude?
a) Improved rate-of-climb
b) 10% fuel saving
c) Increase range to 4330 nm
Why Have Sharklets

The high pressure on the lower surface of the wing creates lateral airflow outwards or away from the
fuselage towards the wingtip where, on account of relatively lower air pressure above the wing, tends
to spill over and swirl around the wingtip to form a vortex creating additional drag described as
induced drag thereby reducing aerodynamic efficiency of the wing.

Winglets (Sharklets) are small aerodynamic Surfaces mounted almost vertically at the wingtips.
Inspiration for the design came from birds observed to curl their wingtip feathers upward when in
need of high lift. A well designed winglet rises vertically and is swept back such that it significantly
reduces the size of the wingtip vortex thus reducing induced drag.
Sharklet General Arrangement

The whole family of A320 aircraft are available with Sharklets

Airport compatibility unchanged with Sharklets

Code C category for airport classification is Wing Span 24 to 36 meters
