Basic concepts of

RESEARCH
Research defined

Research is organized and

systematic inquiry or
investigation which provides
information for solving a
problem or finding answers to a
complex issue.
Fundamental Types of Research

Basic Research -
generating scientific
knowledge for future use.
Applied Research -
Undertaken to solve
existing problems.
SELECTING THE RIGHT TOPIC

This is the first

Step!
Choice of Research Topic (The "What").

Approach
Choosing a research topic or title (i.e., getting
started) is perhaps the most difficult part of
writing a synopsis.
Framing the Title
Your title should summarise your topic and
should not be a ramble over what you think,
illuminated and what you have read.
Research Problem
The formulation of the problem
is often more essential than its
solution.
(-Albert Einstein)
The Iceberg Principle
That the dangerous part of many business
problems is neither visible to nor
understood by managers.
Brief, Precise but adequate!
Research Problem

The research problem is typically posed as a

question.
It is a problem that someone would like to
investigate.
It is considered a situation that needs to be
changed or addressed.
EXAMPLES
Why employees in organization are less productive?
How we can increase our market share?
Factors to consider in Selecting a
Research Problem

Defining your destination before

beginning a journey.
It determines,
what you will do,
how you will do it, and
what you may achieve!
Factors to consider in Selecting a Research
Problem

The topic should be important (significant)

Consider the feasibility of the project.
How much time do you have available
Do you really want to do a longitudinal study
that will take a considerable time?
How difficulties it have. Is data available?
How much will it cost?
Factors to consider in Selecting a Research
Problem

You should have a personal interest in

the topic.
There is a need to isolate and identify
the problems not the symptoms.
The newness of the topic may hold
your interest longer, however there is
some value in repeating previous
research
HOW TO START ??????
Identify a broad area that interests you
Read the literature
Narrow the area to 2 or 3 topics
Thoroughly examine the literature on the 2-3 topics
Select a single problem from 2-3 topics
Generally this means reducing
the scope of the topic.
REFINING TH TOPIC
The topic has to be clarified!

The topic needs to reworded so

that it states clearly and
unambiguously the matter to
be investigated, the variables to
be investigated, and
participants, if any, that will be
involved.
RESEARCH TOPIC.
-Research topic needs to be
interesting.
-Avoid old and well-studied topic.
-10-12 words .
-Develop a title after finishing the
paper.
-Title needs to reflect the essence
of the research.
-This forms the first impression
about your research
