IS NEW SEC COMMISSIONER

A long-time serving official of
the corporate regulator
Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) has been
appointed as its new
commissioner.
President Rodrigo Duterte on
December 2 signed the
appointment papers of Emilio
Benito Aquino as the new
SEC commissioner. He
replaces Commissioner
Manuel Huberto Gaite whose
term expired on March 11,
2016.

Before his appointment, Aquino was a
practicing CPA-lawyer based in Zamboanga
City. From 1993 to 2005, Aquino served the
SEC in various positions, as the head of SEC
Davao and the Zamboanga extension office, as
director of the prosecution and enforcement
department, non-traditional securities and
instruments department, and compliance and
enforcement.
Aquino has an accounting degree from the
Universidad de Zamboanga; he was class
valedictorian and graduated magna cum
laude.
He also passed the CPA licensure exam with a
rating of 89.14 percent.
He finished his law studies at the San Beda
College of Law where he was a Deans Lister
and a Silver Medalist. He also was among the
topnotchers in the 1992 Bar Exams where he
ranked 16th.
He also earned a masters in public
management through a government
scholarship at the Development Academy of
the Philippines (DAP), graduating at the top
of his class.
