Intrinsically Safe Network Dilemma
Existing IS Networks:
ControlNet
Foundation Fieldbus
Profibus PA
HART

These Networks are:

Too big,
Too complicated
Too expensive!

Rick Ales 4/21/2003 Swagelok Company, 2002

Why DeviceNet?
Up to 64 Nodes.
500 m @ 125Kb, 100 m @ 500Kb.
8 byte network length, fragmentation application.
Linear trunk / drop line.
Power & signal on same cable. 24Vdc @ 8A
Peer to Peer or Master/Slave.
Remove & replace under power.
Hazardous area classification is Class 1 Div 2
Open standard administered by ODVA.

SMALL, SIMPLE & CHEAP!!

5-10 times cheaper than other industrial networks.

Rick Ales 4/21/2003 Swagelok Company, 2002

Why Not DeviceNet?
Not rated Class 1 Div 1
A factory automation protocol.

Rick Ales 4/21/2003 Swagelok Company, 2002

NeSSI Sensor Bus Choices
Make a Class 1 Div 1 network (ie. Foundation
Fieldbus, Profibus PA, Hart, or ControlNet)
small and cheap or

Use Class 1 Div 2 DeviceNet in an enclosure

rated for hazardous environments or

Make DeviceNet Class 1 Div 1

DeviceNet Overview
DeviceNet is an open industrial networks built
upon the Common Industrial Protocol (CIP).
DeviceNet is managed by ODVA.
ControlNet is managed by ControlNet International
EtherNet/IP jointly managed by ControlNet International & ODVA

Intrinsically Safe DeviceNet
Class 1 Zone 0 rating of EEx ia IIC T4
DeviceNet Master and the single network power
source is located in Class 1 Zone 2 area.
Main trunk line maximum distance 100 ft.
Maximum power consumption per node is 0.25W
Maximum 10 nodes per trunk line.

Technically feasible!!

Open DeviceNet Vendor
Association

ODVA is an international association

comprised of members from the world's
leading automation companies.

Rick Ales 4/21/2003 Swagelok Company, 2002

ODVAs Role
Owns and manages the DeviceNet Specification.
Manages the development of CIP network
technologies.
Assists manufacturers and users of CIP networks
through tools, training and marketing activities.
Manages testing labs to verify conformance of
vendors' products to the DeviceNet Specifications.

DeviceNet IS Initiative
Extend the user layer definitions to include
analytical instrumentation device definitions and
additional EDS formats.
Extend the conformance testing to include support
for analytical applications.
Extend the physical layer definition to include the
intrinsically safe option.
Obtain agency approval of DeviceNet IS.

Rick Ales 4/21/2003 Swagelok Company, 2002

Resource Requirements
Quorum of Analytical Instrumentation vendors to form
a DeviceNet SIG and create device profiles &
conformance tests. ($5K/yr ODVA dues.)
Analytical Instrument SIG might be supplemented by a
Users Advisory Board. (Associate membership)
Engineering resource for physical layer development.
Technical resource to obtain agency approval.

Development, testing and approval project costs:

$500K to $750K.

Rick Ales 4/21/2003 Swagelok Company, 2002

Whats Next?
Reassess the need for intrinsically safe network.
Convene a group of Key NeSSI stake holders to
meet with ODVA directors to create a DeviceNet
IS initiative project plan and identify resources
and funding sources.
ODVA goal: announce the DeviceNet IS initiative
at ISA 2003.
