CHEM 1020 General Chemistry IB
(Fall 2017)
Class Schedule:

Lecture:
Tuesday, 9:30-10:20 LTA
Thursday, 9:30-10:20 LTA

Tutorial:
To be arranged
Course Objectives
Chemistry is a science that studies matter, its composition,
properties, and the changes it undergoes.

Matter: anything with mass and occupies space.

In chemistry terminology: All matter (Everything) is made of

chemicals.
Chemistry and Life
We encounter and use chemicals every days.
Chemistry: Its Central Role

Chemistry is a central science. It is related to many modern

technologies and industries.
Chemistry and Future
Many problems require chemistry knowledge to resolve, e.g.

New medicines
Course Objectives

To introduce fundamental concepts and

principles of chemistry.

To prepare you for further study in other

chemistry-related subjects in Science and
Engineering.

Key topics: atomic structures, bonding theories,

thermochemistry, solution chemistry, properties
of gas.
Tentative Course Outline

Chapter 1. Introduction: Matter and Measurements

Chapter 2. Chemical Foundations
Chapter 3. Atomic Structure and Periodicity
Chapter 4. Bonding: General Concepts
Chapter 5. Molecular Geometry and Bonding Theories
Chapter 6. Chemical Stoichiometry
Chapter 7. Chemical reactions in aqueous solution
Chapter 8. Thermochemistry: Chemical Energy
Chapter 9. Gases
Textbook and Lecture Notes
Textbook:
"Chemistry: An Atoms First Approach"
Zumdahl and Zumdahl, 2016
Cengage Learning International Edition

Lecture Notes:

Lecture-note will be posted on the CANVAS website

After-lecture-note will also be posted after finishing each chapter.

Lectures will be videotaped and uploaded to CANVAS after each lecture.

Knowledge/Content Related Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the student will be able to:

1. Describe and apply elementary concepts and terminologies of
chemistry
2. Describe the structure of atoms and periodicity, and
determine electron configurations.
3. Describe and apply the primary concepts of bonding theory.
4. Describe and apply the basic concepts of thermochemistry.
5. Perform chemical stoichiometric calculations
6. Describe properties of gases

Course Policies
Students are expected to be attentive and non-disruptive in
class.
A student may be asked to leave the classroom for behavior that hinders the
learning environment for the majority.

The examinations must be taken at the time as announced in

class or on the CANVAS website.
Make up exam will possibly be arranged for true emergencies and has to be
proved with documentations.

You are expected to practice the highest possible standards of

academic integrity.
Any deviation from this expectation will result in a minimum academic penalty of
failing the assignment or test, and will result in additional disciplinary measures.
For more information on HKUSTs academic integrity policy, please check out the
following link: http://www.ust.hk/provost/integrity/index.html

Students who have disabilities requiring special arrangements for class participation
or test administration should notify the instructor of the need for such arrangements in
advance.
