Pharmacy Conditions
Indonesia is one of the most populous countries in the world, with a

population of 247 million. However, Indonesia's spending on health is less than the average

for countries in the East Asia and Pacific region and the lower middle income group of

countries. Since 2005, the public finance and supply systems for pharmaceuticals have

witnessed major changes, such as decentralization of most public health services to district

governments, establishment of the BPJS scheme for the poor, the creation of the National

Agency of Drug and Food Control, and the introduction of competitive tendering for public

procurement of medicines.

Good distribution practice standards began to be implemented in 2008.

Indonesia's domestic pharmaceutical industry is mainly engaged in the production and

marketing of branded generic, generic, and licensed drugs from pharmaceutical companies

abroad. Pharmacists in Indonesia have begun to be engaged in health promotion and public

health practice. The practice of clinical pharmacy services is relatively new in Indonesia,

being introduced around the beginning of the twenty-first century. The concept of clinical

pharmacy itself has not been fully accepted by health workers in the hospitals, so that

clinical pharmacy services in Indonesia are growing quite slowly.

Challenges
Over the past four decades there has been
a trend for pharmacy practice to move away
from its original focus on medicine supply
towards a more inclusive focus on patient
care.
The role of the pharmacist has evolved from
that of a compounder and supplier of
pharmaceutical products towards that of a
provider of services and information and
ultimately that of a provider of patient care.
Increasingly, the pharmacists task is to
ensure that a patients drug therapy is
appropriately indicated, the most effective
available, the safest possible, and
convenient for the patient. By taking direct
responsibility for individual patients
medicine-related needs, pharmacists can
make a unique contribution to the outcome
of drug therapy and to their patients

quality of life.
