MODULE 10 COLLABORATIVE

DISCUSSION
BY: ZOEY OUTLAW
WHAT IS PERIMETER AND HOW IS IT CALCULATED?

Perimeter is the total distance outside of the shape. Perimeter also can show
the outline of a figure. Perimeter is usually measured in units such as feet or
meters. It is typically found by adding together a structure's sides, length, or
width. Below are formulas of perimeter for three different figures!

Rectangle!
P=2(l + w) Square!
Triangle! P=4a
P=a +b + c
WHAT IS AREA AND HOW IS IT CALCULATED?

Area is the space inside an object. A typically unit of measurement for area
are square inches or feet. This is more likely to be solved by multiplication
than addition. Below are different shapes and their formulas for area!

Rectangle!
A=lw
Circle!
Triangle! = 2
A=1/2bh

WHAT ARE 3 REAL-WORLD USES OF PERIMETER?

1. If you wanted to install a fence outside of your backyard, you would first need to find
the perimeter. If your yard is a rectangular shape, you will add the length and the
width together using this formula: P=2l+2w. This will help you to know how much of
the fence you need to purchase.
2. Allie has just received a triangular shaped kite for her birthday. She would like to
know how large the outline of it is because she believe this will make it fly higher. To
figure this out, Allie can use the formula P=a+b+c.
3. Angelina is making a sign for the bake sale. She needs it to be a certain size so she
can put it on a bulletin board in her classroom to advertise it. She has found a square
sheet of paper, but is worried it is too big. To determine this, she can solve using the
formula for the perimeter of a square. This is P=4a.
WHAT ARE 3 REAL-WORLD USES OF AREA?
1. An interior designer was hired to redo a rectangular shaped kitchen. The
designer would like to know how large the inside of the room is. To figure this
out, they can use the area formula for a rectangle. This is A=lw.
2. Sam wants to put in new bathroom tiles for a square shaped room. To find
out how many tiles he needs to purchase, he can use A=2 .
3. Sophie takes swim lessons at the YMCA. She noticed the pool she was
swimming in was a lot bigger than the one she has at home. Sophie wants to
compare the size of the rectangular YMCA pool to the circular one in her
backyard. She will first find the area of the YMCA pool by using this formula:
A=lw. Next she will find the area of her own by = 2 . She can then
subtract the two to see how much bigger the practice pool is.
MAKE UP YOUR OWN WORD PROBLEM THAT COULD
BE SOLVED BY FINDING PERIMETER OR AREA.

Bella has a telescope at home. She knows

the larger the area of the lens, the better the
magnification. She knows that the diameter
of the lens is 12 inches. What is the area?
(Solution is on the next slide!)

Frist find the Radius Now, find the Area
1

2 = 3.14(6)2
1
= 2 (12) A=3.14(36)
=6 A= 133.04
The radius of Bellas telescope is 6 inches. When rounding pi to 3.14, the area of Bellas
telescope lens is about 133.04 square inches.

D=12 D=12

A=133.042
