Pre operative care.

This is the care given to the patient who is for

surgical intervention from when decision for surgery is

made up to when the patient is taken to theatre.

 aims

To prepare the patient physically, psychologically,

socially, for the operation.

To prevent intra operative &post operative

complications.

To promote quick recovery.

 What entails in preoperative care

Admission- Admitted
on surgical ward in a clean room, bed,&comfortable position.

Patients
particulars taken i.e NASTRONAND.
Observation ie TPR,BP GAIT, Observation i.e. TPR BP

General
examination ,i.e. head to toe and systemic examination

.History
taken from patients or care takers ie CMH PMH PSH SH FH

Investigations
, this will iclude the following .
HB, GROUPING &CROSSMATCH, ELCTROLYTES

CBC ,SEROLOGY ,X-RAY ,USS ,MRI ,CT LFT ,RFT

, Orientation of the patient is done , mainly touring the hospital and the relevant departments and places.

 Nursing care

Hygiene , patient is given a bath if unable then if able self bathing is done

paying more attention on the part to be operated

Rest and sleep , patient should be given enough time to rest if unable

some sedatives are given.

Bowel and bladder, bowel preparation is done like bowel wash out if

applicable ,enema can be done, catheter can be inserted in case it is

needed

Pain control pain killers like diclofenac ,pct can be given in case of pain
 Nursing care cont:

Nutrition ,patient should assessed for the nutrition status and if it

needs correction can corrected

Treatment , in case of the co existing infections like rtis can be

treated.

Psychological management ,patient is cancelled on the surgery and

its outcomes ,mode of anaesthesia,theatre picture and othrs

Exercises ,passive and active exercises are done to prevent

complications
 Premedication ,if the patient iome medications that are

contraindicated during surgery they can be stopped. Like

Anesthetic review ,this is should be done by the a anesthesia team a

day before surgery

Physical preparation, this iclude removal of dentures , bangles,eare

rings necklaces,prosthetic and the others

 DAY OF OPERATION

Consent ,this should be informed consent

Prophylactic antibiotic are administered 30 minutes
before surgery.
Ng tube ,catheter, can be passed if they are needed.
Collection of the case notes are all corrected.
Baseline observations are taken .
Patients gown is given to the patient.
Theatre staff is informed.
