UNIVERSITAS NEGERI SURABAYA
JURUSAN BIOLOGI - FMIPA
2012
WHAT WILL YOU LEARN?

1.You will describe the scope of biology

2.You will identify the characteristic of life
WHAT IS BIOLOGY?

When you hear the word biology,

what do you think of? In the space
below, make a list of some of the
topics you think you will learn about
as you study biology?
Biology is the study of life. When you
study biology, you will learn about all of
the different kind of living things.
You will learn where they live, what they
are like, how they depend on each other,
and how they behave.
One of the main ideas in biology is that
living things depend on each other. They
are part of what is called the balance of
nature.
The Scope of
Biology

Biology and its study are arranged hierarchically.

New properties (emergent properties) arise at each level of organization.
Branches of Biology

Branches Of Object of Biological Study

Biology
Anatomy Inner structures that make up living organism
Bacteriology Bacteria
Virology Virus
Biotechnology The use of biology and technology to supply human needs and
services. To make or modify products or processes for specific
use
Botany Scientific study of plants
Ecology Relationship between living things (organisms) and their
environments
Genetics Heredity of living organisms
Characteristics of Living
Things
First Characteristic of Living Things
The first characteristic of living things is
that they are all composed of cells.
Cells are the itsy bitsy puzzle pieces that
make up all living things.
Second Characteristic of Living
Things
The second characteristic of living things
is Organization.
All of the little cells that come together to
make living things do so in a specific
order.
For example a group of muscle cells come
together to form our muscles.
Third Characteristic of Living
Things
The third characteristic of living things is
all living things use energy.

Animals and humans eat food Plants however use the

to obtain their energy. sunlight to obtain their
energy.
Fourth Characteristic of Living
Things
The fourth characteristic of living things is
homeostasis.
This is maintaining the inside of their
bodies.
Eating the right foods and staying clean
are parts of this maintaining process.
Fifth Characteristic of Living Things
The fifth characteristic of living things is
that all living things grow.
Sixth Characteristic of Living
Things
The sixth characteristic of living things is
reproduction. All living things need to
reproduce to survive.
Living or Non-living and Why?

Living Non-Living Living

Non-Living Living Non-Living

Six Characteristics of Living Things
1. Cells
2. Organization
3. Energy
4. Homeostasis
5. Growth
6. Reproduction
