 SELECTING TEXTS
Obviously the criteria for the selection of
texts depend on what the texts are going
to be used for.
1. As a Basis for Unit in a Set of Materials

The important point is that the texts should

have the potential to engage the learners
affectively and cognitively and should offer
the learners a rich experience of both
language and life.
2. As a Basis for a Reading/Listening Skills Lesson

The important point is that the text should

not be selected just because it focuses on a
perticular skill which you want to teach.
3. As a Basis for a Reading/Listening Skills Lesson

We would argue that texts for use in

language teaching should be selected
according to the criteria 1 above and that in
addition we should ask :
 WRITING INSTRUCTIONS
Instructions are very important. Learners
who have difficulty understanding them
feel negative about the materials (and
possibly about their own ability too) and
might not be able to use them
successfully.
 We have used the following criteria to help
ourselves and others to write clear instructions
 USING ILLUSTRATIONS
What do we Mean by Illustrations in
Materials?
The term illustration is used in this booklet
to refer to all kinds of visual elements in
materials
 Illustrations may include :
Photos
Drawings and paintings
Cartoons
Mock documents that simulate real life
documents (e.g. Letters, book covers, diary
pages, newspapers adverts, road signs)
Graphs, charts, maps, diagrams
Functional illustrations (e.g. Graphically
designed headings, icons, arrows, colour
backgrounds)
 DESIGN AND LAYOUT

Layout means structural arrangement of

parts (e.g. Text and illustrations).
 Good layout can play significant role in :

Attracting attention
Providing focus
Sequencing smoothly
Separating different sections
Attracting aesthetic responses
Providing consistency
Providing impact by dramatically
departing from the normal layout
