INTRODUCTION

ENDOCYTOSIS

- Cell engulfs some of its extracellular fluid (ECF)

including material dissolved or suspended in it.

- Portion of the plasma membrane is invaginated, coated

with molecules of the protein clathrin, and pinched off
forming a membrane-bounded vesicle called an endosome.

Two Types of Endocytosis:
Phagocytosis ("cell eating")

> cell binds to the item it wants to engulf on the cell surface and draws
the item inward while engulfing around it.

Pinocytosis (cell drinking)

> cell engulfs extracellular fluid, including molecules such as sugars and
proteins.

Receptor Mediated Endocytosis

> cells absorb metabolites, hormones, other proteins and in some cases
viruses by the inward budding of plasma membrane vesicles containing
proteins with receptor sites specific to the molecules being absorbed.

Tetrahymena sp.
- Free-living unicellular eukaryote.

- Commonly found in temperate

freshwater environments.

- A ciliate considered to be the most

highly developed protozoan,
because it possesses specialized
organelles that perform each of the
cell functions.

- It possesses rapid adaptation

machineries to regulate biological
processes including conjugation,
cell division, and cell death against

Why use Tetrahymena sp. in observing
Phagocytosis?
- Easily obtained, cultured
and manipulated.
- Phagocytosis can be
observed under the
microscope.
- Food vacuoles can be
readily observed.

OBJECTIVES

To distinguish between phagocytosis and pinocytosis

To trace the pathway of food within a single-celled

organism

To identify the food preference of the test organism
