ARTICULATION OF FORM
Lesson 4B
ARTICULATION OF FORM
1. Differentiating the adjacent surface with a
change in material, color, texture or pattern.
ARTICULATION OF FORM
2. Developing the corner as a distinct linear
element independent of the surface
ARTICULATION OF FORM
3. Removing the corner to physically separate
adjacent planes
ARTICULATION OF FORM
4. Lighting the form to create sharp
distinctions of light and dark at its corners
Articulation of Form: EDGES & CORNERS

CORNERS define the meeting of two

planes if it simply touch, and remains
unadorned, the appearance will depend
on the visual treatment of the adjoining
surfaces.
FOUR WAYS TO VISUALLY REINFORCE A CORNER
1. By introducing a separate and distinct element
that is independent of the surfaces it joins. This
element articulates the corner as a linear condition,
defines the edges of the adjoining planes, and
becomes a positive feature of the form.
2. if an opening is introduced at the corner, one of the
plane will appear to bypass the other. The opening de-
emphasize the corner, weakens the definition of the
volume within the form, and emphasizes the planar
qualities of the surfaces.
3. If neither plane is extended to define the corner, a
volume of space is created to replace the corner. This
corner deteriorates the forms volume, allows the
interior space to leak outward and clearly reveals the
surfaces as planes in space.
4. Rounding off the corner emphasize continuity of a
forms surface.

SURFACE

Architectural surfaces are areas of materials

which enclose the building the skin of planar
surface
It must have TEXTURE (quality of surface
treatment), TONE (the variety of the use of gradation
from balck to white) and COLOR (chromatic energy)
RED rage of passion, health and vitality, etc
YELLOW gayety, stimulating cheering to the lazy,
upsetting to the nervous
ORANGE has stimulating effect (small amounts)
BROWN restful and warming but should be
combined with orange
GRAY cold, depressing unless combined with
warm colors
WHITE cheerful, pure and clean
PURPLE sedative and soothing, suggest melancholy
atmosphere, cowardliness, cheapness
BLUE peaceful and tranquil
GREEN has cooling quality and act as sedative
COLOR AS SAFETY GUIDES
Red - Stop
Orange Danger
Yellow Caution or Risk
Green Safety
Blue Mandatory Action
Purple Radiation Hazard
