When we communicate with another person, the speaker is giving the


intention of the message that they want to deliver.
The effect of the speakers message causes an impact on the listener
and how they will respond to the message.

What is Racism?
*Definition from Merriam Webster How people become racist:

Different Types of Racism
Colorblindness: The racial ideology that
posits the best way to end discrimination is by
treating individuals as equally as possible,
without regard to race, culture, or ethnicity.
Racial Prejudice: Personal opinions about
individuals on the basis of race.
Racial Discrimination: Different treatment
of people on the basis of characteristics which
may be classified racial, including skin color,
cultural heritage, and religion.
Reverse Racism: A pejorative and
controversial term used to describe attitudes,
behaviors, and policies which are racially
discriminatory in a manner contrary to
historical patterns of racial discrimination.
History of Racial Discrimination
In the 1800s, Africans were taken and served as slaves
who worked in plantation agriculture. Slaves were freed
around the 1860s thanks to Abraham Lincoln.

During World War II times, the genocide of 6 million


European Jews killed by the German Nazis led by Adolf
Hitler.

In the 1950s, the Civil Rights movement began. The Civil


Rights movement started to help end segregation and
end racial inequality.

In the 1960s, the Chicano Movement, a Mexican


American Civil Rights Movement started in a fight for
equality for the Hispanic community. Inspired the
Chicano Blowouts.

In 1944, the Korematsu v. United States court case


followed concerning the executive order of Japanese
Americans being placed in internment camps during
World War II.

In 2017, a temporary ban was placed against Muslims


from entering the United States.
Racial Segregation
The separation of humans into Plessy v. Ferguson: Racial

Last Sunday, I was sitting on a bench in the park. Near where I sat, a
white father was playing with his young son. A black couple walked by
with their dog, and the boy went over to pet the dog. The father pulled
his son back toward him and told him to leave the dog alone.
To what extent did this situation depict an instance of unfair
treatment based on race?

One day, I was driving around town, running errands with my aunt,
who is black. As we were stopped at a red light, we noticed a black
pedestrian walking down the sidewalk on our same side of the street.
The man was dressed in layers and appeared to be carrying a bundle of
newspapers. Upon seeing the man, my aunt asked me to lock the car
doors.
To what extent did this situation depict an instance of unfair

Last weekend I was out at a popular nightclub. Sometimes they ask for
IDs. There were two young women in line ahead of me. The bouncer,
who was white, asked the white woman to pay the fee, and then let her
in. He then asked the black women to pay the fee, and then asked to see
her ID.
