Infinitives
-ING form
Infinitives

The infinitive form of a verb is the verb in its basic/base form. It is the
version of the verb which will appear in the dictionary.

The infinitive form of a verb is usually preceded by to (to run, to dance, to


think). The infinitive form is not always preceded by to. Look at these
examples:

I need to fix this computer.

They must run every day.


The infinitive form is used after certain
verbs:

forget, help, learn, teach, train, choose,


expect, hope, need, offer, want, would like,
agree, encourage, pretend, promise, allow,
decide, manage, mean, refuse.
Refuse : rechazar
Mean: implicar, tener la intencin de
Decide: decidir
Choose: elegir
Manage: Gestionar, administrar
Choose: seleccionar
Need: necesitar
Want: querer, desear
Examples
I forgot to turn off the computer

Sebastian needs to study more!

Sara refused to receive the new


iPhone I bought for her
The infinitive form is always used
after adjectives, for example:

disappointed, glad, happy, sad, surprised,


delighted, excited, ashamed, determined,
shocked, prepared, afraid, lucky, etc
Examples
Trixie was ashamed to have that
awful name!

Oh yes, I am so happy to see


you!

The students were disappointed


to get these bad marks!

The ing form can be used like a noun, like
an adjective or like a verb

Smoking is forbidden.

I have a long exhausting day.

I don't like painting.


The -ing form is used when the word is
the subject of a sentence or clause

Playing is great.

Doctors say that smoking


is bad for you.
The -ing form is used after a preposition:

Designers started a project


by writing a weblog.

They left without saying


"Goodbye."
The -ing form is used after certain verbs:

admit, like, hate, start, avoid, suggest, enjoy,


love, dislike, begin, finish, give up, practise,
dont mind, cant help, stop.
Examples
I dislike using Excel

She enjoys uploading


videos to YouTube
