Initially, introduced for MARITIME comn
INMARSAT = International Maritime Satellite
Internationally owned co-operative system
Provides world wide mobile satellite communication
for maritime, aeronautical and land mobile users.
Introduced on 15th July 1979 but started functioning
w.e.f. 1st February 1982.
Headquarter in LONDON (Britain)
Has 84 nos member countries. India is also one of
them.
Presently has 11 Geo-stationary satellites and 40
earth stations with respective links to National &
International PSTN system and mobile links.
All the 11 satellites are positioned in such a way that
they can cover the three ocean regions.
4 nos out of the 11
satellites are owned by
INMARSAT organization
The remaining 7 satellites
are hired from other
organization like
INTELSAT, COMSAT &
ESA.

INMARSAT-A SYSTEM
It has almost 8000 land based and 19,000
Maritime INMARSAT-A throughout the
world.
Can provide satellite phone, telex, Data,
Fax or Photo services.
Multi-channel systems capable to handle
2, 4, 6 voice channels simultaneously are
available on demand basis.
High speed DATA transmission.
INMARSAT-B SYSTEM
It is digital version of INMARSAT A
System.
Can provide high quality duplex
voice, fax & data at 9.6 Kbps.
Terminals available are vehicle
mounted (land mobile), briefcase
size (land portable) and maritime
version.
INMARSAT C SYSTEM
Advanced packet data communication
system.
Special distress alerting feature.
Encryption facility.
Cost of terminal is Rs.4 Lacks appx. NERA MINI C
Automatic transmission of distress signal to
RCC (Rescue Co-ordination Centre) via LES
(land earth station). All RCC are connected
with their own INMARSAT shell Earth Station.
So, without loss of time any ship can reach
to the spot for rescue.
INMARSAT M SYSTEM
Offers digital telephony (4.8 Kbps), group 3
Fax and duplex data 2.4 Kbps through a
compact, light weight satellite terminal.
Terminal may be vehicle, boat or ship
mounted.
Approx cost is Rs.6 Lacks.
Brief case size terminal weight approx 8.5-13
Kgs.
Battery backup available.
Indian Railways with BSNL collaboration has
recently introduced INMARSAT M in
selected RAJDHANI trains.

NERA MINI M

Spot Beam Technology used in INMARSAT-3 generation.


Terminal is of 2 Kg and small brief case size.
Cost approx 2 lacks.
Covers 90% of the earth surface.
Available in RAJDHANI trains and being extended to other
trains.
NORWAY provides world phone.
BSF has acquired this world phone which is in use in J&K and
in remote locations.
Big relief to people constantly on the move due to compact
terminal and small size similar to a note book.
USES
Provides all time all places (Sea, Earth
& Space) communication.
Support for voice, data and fax.
Useful during disaster/ distress to
provide communication when
conventional communication gets
failed..
Faster services for corporate sectors.
