2
Aim

To develop a method of obtaining the

blocking constraints between parts of an
assembly, given its geometric description by
implementing an Extended NDBG (Non
Directional Blocking Graph)

To develop an optimal assembly sequence

planning for Boeing Test Airplane

3
Motivation
Assembly Sequence Planning plays an important
role in Product Design.

Provide immediate feedback to a team of product

designers about the complexity of assembling the
product being designed.

This would be particularly useful in complex

assemblies where each designer may not be fully
aware of the impact of his design changes on the
assembly of the product as a whole.

4
Motivation
Assembly sequence planning can help us to achieve :

Reduction in overall manufacturing assembly time

and cost
Reduction in Number of fixture and tool changes
Significant labor cost can be reduced
Give product designers an idea about the
complexity of product before manufacturing

5
Problem Statement
Given:
STL File of the Airplane containing the CAD
representation in the form of a Polygon Mesh.

Final Objective:
- Using Assembly-by-Disassembly approach
finding the optimal assembly sequence planning
of the airplane.
- Explore the possibility of extending this
approach to Flexible Subassemblies.

6
Problem Statement
Constraints :

The approach is limited to only Three

Dimensional Translation without Rotation
Every Assembly is a subassembly of the final
assembly i.e. any assembly of two or parts will be
used as it is in the Final Model.
All the parts are assumed to be rigid [the
possibility of any flexible part will be explored]

7
Procedure
Literature Review Understanding the
Extended NDBG algorithm to understand the
blocking relationships between parts.
In initial experiments well consider relatively
small assemblies of 20 to 40 parts and 500 to
1500 faces, using translational motions.
Exploring the possibility of improving the Existing
Algorithm by improving its complexity.
Then well extend this approach to our case of the
Boeing Airplane Test.

8
NDBG [Non Directional Blocking Graphs]
Summarizes the blocking relationships within an
assembly for that class of motion
