Dimensional Analysis
gsbitao_2012
What is Dimensional Analysis?
Dimensional analysis is a means of simplifying a physical
problem by appealing to dimensional homogeneity to
reduce the number of relevant variables.

Dimensions of common derived mechanical quantities are given in the
following table.

Working Out Dimensions
In the following, [ ] means dimension of.
Example
1. Use the definition = to determine the dimension of viscosity.
2. Use the definition Re = to determine the dimension of Reynolds
Number.

Dimensional Homogeneity

Example:
Consider the equation which expresses the displacement of
a falling body, determine if the equation is homogeneous or
not.

Example: Dimensional Homogeneity of the Bernoullis
Equation
Probably the most well-known equation in fluid mechanics is the Bernoulli
equation. One standard form of the Bernoulli equation is
(a) Verify that each additive term in the Bernoulli equation has the same
dimensions.

Example:
A thin rectangular plate having a width w and a height h is located so that it is
normal to a moving stream of fluid as shown in figure. Assume the drag, d, that
the fluid exerts on the plate is a function of w and h, the fluid viscosity and
density, and , respectively, and the velocity V of the fluid approaching
the plate. Determine a suitable set of pi terms to study this problem
experimentally.
