Opinion or fact?

A fact (in an academic essay) something that can be


proven with evidence; something that all reasonable
people would agree is true

An opinion (in an academic essay) a belief, judgement,


personal view or attitude that reasonable people may
disagree about
Persuasive essays

In a persuasive essay, you give your opinion about a topic,


and try to convince the reader that your opinion is the
truth by using arguments supported by examples and facts.

The opinion in an essay is also called the thesis.


Activity 1
Look at this essay question.

Do you agree or disagree with the following


statement? People should sometimes do things that
they do not enjoy doing. Use specific reasons and
details to support your answer.

When you answer this question, you can choose one of two
possible theses (opinions)? What are they?
Read the sample essay. What is the thesis?
The structure of a 5-paragraph essay
