Core Competency 1: Demonstrate
Ethical & Professional Behavior
1.1: Make ethical decisions by applying the
standards of the NASW Code of Ethics, relevant
laws & regulations, models for ethical decision
making, ethical conduct of research, & additional
codes of ethics as appropriate to context.
Ex: Maintain confidentiality, follow agency and
state procedures, and use child protective
services intake decision tree to make decisions.
Core Competency 1:
1.2: Use reflection & self-regulation to
manage personal values & maintain
professionalism in practice situations.
Ex: Develop self awareness of biases & be
able to control emotions & behaviors in
intense conditions.
1.3: Demonstrate professional demeanor
in behavior; appearance; & oral, written,
& electric communication.
Ex: Dress appropriately according to dress
codes, be on time, & use professionalism
in the workplace & with clients.
Core Competency 1:
1.4: Use technology ethically & appropriately
to facilitate practice outcomes.
Ex: Foster care social workers use tech to
keep clients files & information confidential &
private. Also, we use technology to as
resources to locate clients & services for
clients.
1.5: Use supervision and consultation to guide
professional judgment & behavior.
Ex: Attend weekly meetings with supervisor to
discuss concerns & ways to make
improvements.

Diversity & Difference in Practice
2.1: Apply & communicate understanding of
the importance of diversity & difference in
shaping life experiences in practice at the
micro, mezzo, & macro levels.
Ex: Familiarize self with the NASW code of
ethics & read the agencys manual &
standards.
2.2: Present themselves as learners &
engage clients & constituencies as experts
of their own experiences.
Ex: Listen to clients concerns & be able to
help & make recommendations for services.

Ex: Asses each day in journal & take time
to think of how I can improve my
practices.

3.1: Apply understanding of social,
economic, & environmental justice to
advocate for human rights at the
individual & system levels.
Ex: Being able to understand clients needs
to engage with clients and connect them
with resources such as drug facilities and
treatment centers to help with their
needs.

Ex: Attend PPATs and monitoring visits with
parents on weekends.

4.1: Use practice experience & theory to
inform scientific inquiry & research.
Ex: Research why generational involvement of
CPS occurs in families and the reoccurrence
of CPS occurs.
4.2: Apply critical thinking to engage in
analysis of quantitative & qualitative research
methods & research findings.
Ex: Find a peer reviewed article that explores
or explains this theory. Explore ways to reduce
the amount of reoccurrence in CPS with
families and ways to diminish generational
involvement.

4.3: Use & translate research evidence to
inform & improve practice, policy, &
service delivery.
Ex: Apply research findings to internship
experience. Implementing a program that
will teach and help parents avoid
reoccurrence.

5.1: Identify social policy at the local, state,
and federal level that impacts well-being,
service delivery, and assess to social services.
Ex: Attend court and observe the court
hearings, family treatment court, and the
recommendations put into place for the
clients.
5.2: Assess how social welfare and economic
policies impact the delivery of and access to
social services.
Ex: Identify how social welfare and economic
policies impact the delivery and access of
services provided to clients.

Ex: Analyze each case and use critical
thinking skills to ensure the policies
advance human rights and social,
economic, and environmental justice.

6.1: Apply knowledge of human behavior
and the social environment, person-in-
environment, and other multidisciplinary
theoretical frameworks to engage with
clients and constituencies.
Ex: Understand the clients situation and
needs, and be able to provide support for
the changes that will be made in the
clients life.

6.2: Use empathy, reflection, and
interpersonal skills to effectively engage
diverse clients and constituencies.
Ex: Listen to and understand the needs of
the client and be able to refer the client
to resources for their needs in the
community.

7.1: Collect and organize data, and apply
critical thinking to interpret information
from clients and constituencies.
Ex: Completing assessments with clients to
find out the best services for their needs.
Competency 7:

theoretical frameworks in interventions
with clients and constituencies.
Ex: Observe the children in their new
placements and how they are adapting
with there surroundings in the
environment.

goals and objectives based on the critical
assessment of strengths, needs, and
challenges within clients and constituencies.
Ex: Discuss the goals that must be completed
through the agency and goals the that the
client may individually have.
7.4: Select appropriate intervention strategies
based on the assessment, research
knowledge, and values and preferences of
clients and constituencies.
Ex: Work with other agencies and professions
in the community to access the best plan for
the client to receive services.
Competency 8: Intervene with
Individuals, Families, Groups,
Organizations, and Communities
8.1: Critically choose and implement interventions to
achieve practice goals and enhance capacities of
clients and constituencies.
Ex: Familiarize self with available resources and
facilities in the community to help client with support
systems and other needs.
8.2: Apply knowledge of human behavior and the
social environment, person-in-environment, and
other multidisciplinary theoretical frameworks in
interventions with clients and constituencies.
Ex: Asses clients and create a case plan based on
their needs from the facts given from the case. Most
plans are reunification with the parent, so being able
to implement services that will strengthen the parents
ability to sufficiently care for the child.
Competency 8:
8.3: Use inter-professional collaboration as
appropriate to achieve beneficial
practice outcomes.
Ex: Attend faculty and supervision
meetings in the workplace and
community and work closely with staff to
provide the best possible services to
clients.
8.4: Negotiate, mediate, and advocate
with and behalf of diverse clients and
constituencies.
Ex: Advocate for the client in court, to the
committee, and in the community.
Competency 8:
8.5: Facilitate effective transitions and
endings that advance mutually agreed-
on goals.
Ex: Regularly attend PPAT meetings, visit
with and stay in contact with the family,
and attend court hearings.
Competency 9: Evaluate Practice
with Individuals, Families, Groups,
Organizations, and Communities
9.1: Select and use appropriate methods for
evaluation of outcomes.
Ex: Create a checklist for workers and clients
to access the progression throughout the
duration of the case.
9.2: Apply knowledge of human behavior and
the social environment, person-in-
environment, and other multidisciplinary
theoretical frameworks in the evaluation of
outcomes.
Ex: Continue to monitor children once they
are placed in foster homes and in the homes
of relatives to evaluate their adaptations and
current circumstances.
Competency 9:
9.3: Critically analyze, monitor, and evaluate
intervention and program processes and
outcomes.
Ex: Check with the facilities, treatment
centers, therapists, and program facilitators
for updates and progress with the clients.
9.4: Apply evaluation findings to improve
practice effectiveness at the micro, mezzo,
and macro levels.
Ex: Assess the outcomes of the facilities,
centers, classes, and other resources used in
the community for the clients and the
effectiveness of these programs.
