The principle of solar power

Consist of a field of solar photovoltaic

modules connected them in series/parallel.

Connected to one or more inverters.

Energy is directly transformed into

electricity panels and password then in the
electric network to the nearest city.

Solar Power Plants

5
The Operation of Solar Power
Plants :

1. Mirrors capture solar radiation at a point so

as to generate very high temperatures
(400-1000 oC).
2. The obtained heat transforms the water in
a steam boiler.
3. Pressurized steam rotates a turbine which
drives an alternator.
4. The generator produces an alternating
electrical current.

Reducing the Number of
Turbine Starts in
Concentrating Solar Power
Plants Trough the Integration
of Thermal Energy Storage
1. Over 90% the currently installed CSP
(concentrating solar power) is based on
parabolic trough system.
2. Parabolic trough solar thermal power plants
with integrated stroge consist of 3 main
circuits : the solar field, the TES system and
the power block.
3. Each circuit operates using a different heat
transfer fluid (HTF)

Conclusions :
1. A detailed analysis of the added value of
integrating TES in CSP plants in terms of
reduction in the cycling operation of the steam-
turbine units.
2. Through the integration of TES, the total number
of turbine starts can be reduced from above 365
starts/yr to below 20 starts/yr, meaning that the
power plant shifts from operating in dailiy cycling
mode to operating in a more conventional base-
load manner.

12
Conclusions :
3. CSP plants with larger TES incurservice
overhauls mainly because of the hours of
electricity production instead of lifetime
consumption due to cycling operation.
4. Although increasing the total investment cost,
TES integration in CSP plants can lead to lower
electricty costs.
5. Larger TES size can significantly reduce life
consumption of steam turbines due to cycling
operation and should be taken into consideration
when determining the optimum TES size for a
given power plant.
