ACCOMODATION OF

SERVICES
INTRODUCTION
 Accommodation of services is very important during design stage.

 A proper planning is needed in order to ensure the safety and

location of the services are strategic and easy to be foreseen by the
people in the building.

 Each building will not provided adequate functionality if the services

is not accommodated in the right way.

 Accommodation of services is very important to ensure the safety of

the services.

 Method of installation also plays an important role to ensure

adequate functionality
Provision of Services

 Services can be accommodate

 Above the structural slab
 Within its actual thickness
 Below the slab or below it supporting beam

In latter method, suspended ceiling is used to

conceal the services.
Provision of Services

 Above the structural slab

- electrical conduit laid on top of slab after it is cast
- top screeding must be thick enough to bring finish
floor level above that of the conduit
- fibre or metal under floor ducting for electrical
especially telephone wiring may be used
- to reduce weight – use lightweight concrete or
foamed mortar
Provision of Services

 Below the slab or below it supporting beam

- ribs or secondary beams on the underside
of the floor – pipes may be suspended from
the slab or rib soffit
- concealed with suspended ceiling at the
level of the rib or beam soffit
Service Ducts

 Ducts for service pipes and cables must run

both vertically and horizontally through the
building.
 The horizontal ducts usually follow route of
corridors to allow ease of access, and may
be between false ceiling and the structural
floor.

 FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM

 Method of Installation

 TELECOMMUNICATION
ELECTRICAL
 A wiring system is a method of installing the electrical
conductors in the building.

 It must provide supply of electricity where required with

complete safety, reliability, protecting the building and its
contents from the risk of damage by fire and protect the
occupants from injury form shock.

 All wiring systems must be provided with electrical protection.

 Electrical protection can be provided in two ways.

ELECTRICAL PROTECTION
 By providing continuous channels in or on the walls and
floors of the building, formed during construction. They
may be formed by:

i. In parts of the building structure, in the form of ducts,

channels and chases.
ii. By shallow metal or fibre ducts and later covered with
concrete screed of plaster.
iii. Running special trunking.
ELECTRICAL PROTECTION

 By providing the cables themselves with

sufficiently strong protection sheath of
suitable material. Types of sheating are:

 Tough rubber sheath

 Polychloroprene sheating
 Plastic sheating
 Lead alloy sheating
BUSBAR TRUNKING SYSTEM
Busbar trunking system is a totally enclosed
electrical distribution system comprising solid
conductors separated by insulating materials.
BUSBAR TRUNKING
 Distribution Trunking

i. Usually applied to distribute power over a

predetermined area.
ii. The busbar trunking can be run vertically or
horizontally or a combination of both.
iii. Power is taken from the busbar trunking by the use of
tap off units which connect at defined positions along
the busbar trunking and allow power to be taken form
the system usually via a suitable protective device.
 Feeder Trunking
 For interconnect between switchboards or between
switchboard & transformer
 More economical to use
BUSBAR TRUNKING SYSTEM
Electrical conduits are installed under the mechanical room slab floor.
Underground electrical duct is installed.
Fiber optic cable installation
AIR CONDITIONING
 Air conditioning is the control of temperature and humidity in a
building as well as the cleaning of particles from the air.
 The type of air-conditioning system that is being studied is
Split Unit System.
 As the name suggests, a split system is an air conditioner
which has been 'split' into two sections - an indoor 'evaporator'
unit and an outdoor 'condenser' section.
 There are several accommodation method adopted for air-
conditioning :
i. Ducting
ii. Concealed installation
DUCTING
 Air conditioning ducts are the most cost effective and
efficient method of conveying cold air from point to
point, and distributing it where its needed.

 Air conditioning ducts are manufactured from

lightweight polythene, and are compatible with most
air conditioners, evaporative cooler and fans.
DUCTING

Air conditioning ducting (silver) installed in the ceiling

CONCEALED INSTALLATION
 Concealed under the surface of walls, floors, beams
or above the ceiling etc.

 Installed to walls before plastering work commence.

 Also can be mounted to wall, ceiling and floor.

 For the external 'condenser' unit has one or two fans it

may be located on the roof, on a wall bracket or in any
of a number of other location, completely concealed.
CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONER -
SINGLE UNIT

This installation has a connecting duct through

the outside wall of the house into one end of
the air conditioner, with the existing ductwork
of the house connected to the other side.
CENTRAL AIR CONDITIONER -
SINGLE UNIT
FIRE PROTECTION SYSTEM
 There are several types of fire protection system installed
in the building such as :
i. Fire alarm system
ii. Hose reel
iii. Portable fire extinguisher

 The accommodation for fire protection system includes :

i. Surface installation
ii. Concealed installation
METHOD OF INSTALLATION
i) Surface Installation

 Installed on the surface of walls and soffit of

ceilings. Usually used for wiring using conduits.

 Example fixed to walls, ceilings, beams, etc.

METHOD OF INSTALLATION

ii) Concealed Installation

 Concealed under the surface of walls,

floors, beams or above the ceiling etc.

 Installed to walls before plastering work

commence.

 Also can be mounted to wall, ceiling and

floor.

PREVIOUS EXAM QUESTIONS
 The large number of services and extensive equipment required
in many types of building necessitates early consideration of
means of housing them both vertically and horizontally. Explain
and illustrate the FOUR (4) methods of accommodating services
as described.

 Services can be accommodated in THREE (3) ways i.e. above

the structural slab; within its actual thickness and below the slab
or below its supporting beam. Explain briefly the circumstances
and method for each of the above provisions of services in floors.

 The methods of accommodating electrical services across the

floor will depend to some extent on the type of floor. Suggest, by
justifying its suitability, and explain with the aid of sketches TWO
(2) alternative methods of accommodating such services across
the floor.
