SOIL STUDY

GRANULAR PILE ANCHOR

REFERENCE
The Granular Pile Anchor is a simple and cost-
effective foundation technique for resisting the
foundation uplift caused by swelling of expansive
clay.
Expanding soil:Expansive soils are those which swell
considerably on absorption of water and shrink on the
removal of water.
Collapsing soil: Collapsible soils are those
unsaturated soils that can withstand relatively high
pressure without showing significant change in
volume, however upon wetting, sudden reduction in
volume occurs.
Expansive soils are soils that
expand when water is added,
and shrink when they dry out. This continuous
change in soil volume can cause homes built on this
soil to move unevenly and crack.
For example, in a wet season, the clay has the capacity of
swelling, and on a dry season, it can shrink and form cracks.
A geotechnical engineer needs to be able
to readily identify the soils that could
collapse and to determine the amount of
collapse that might occur.
The use of granular pile is one of the effective and
efficient methods of ground improvement.

The Granular Pile Anchor is a variant of stone

column technique when put to use under footings in
swelling soils.

Stone column is a well known technique of ground

improvement in soft soils.

The top end of the rod is bent and the footing is

concreted so that it is anchored in the footing.

Granular pile is tension resistant and enables it to

absorb the tensile force caused on the foundation

In normal seasons when swelling pressure does not

act, the downward compressive load also subjects the

granular pile to compression.

Thus the granular pile made to resist both tension and

compression, and herein lies the success of the

method.
Pullout Behavior of Granular Pile-Anchors in
Expansive Clay Beds In Situ by A. Srirama Rao; B.
R. Phanikumar ; R. Dayakar Babu; and K. Suresh
describes about the Laboratory and field-scale test
program conducted to study the pull-out response of
GPAs embedded in expansive clay beds are
presented.
In order to investigate the efficiency of the GPAF
system in practice, a two-story four-bay frame
building resting on a system of GPAF is considered in
the current study. The problem is analyzed by
numerical modelling using the commercially
available finite element software PLAXIS 3D
Foundation.
The two-story frame building considered in the current
study is 6 m high (each story is 3 m in height), and is 20
m 20 m in plan with each bay having dimensions of
5m 5m. A ceiling slab of 160mm thick is assumed for
each story. The slabs are supported by beams, 300mm
wide and 400 mm deep, which in turn rest on square
columns of dimensions 300mm 300mm.
