Primary sources mean
original source or evidence.
Islamic law
Islamic law is known as
Shariah Law, which is
derived from the Quran
and Hadith and applied to
the public and private lives
of Muslims within Islamic
states.
Primary sources of Islamic law

The source of Islamic law is a


main reference to identify and
determines all about Islamic
laws.
Islamic law has not been
given by any ruler.It is given
by Allah.
The Quran
Meaning of word
Quran
The word Quran is derived from
Arabic word Qirat which
means reading or reciting.
Revelation
The Holy Quran was revealed to last Prophet, Holy
Prophet Muhammad (SAWW).
Period of 23 Years.
The Holy Quran covers all dimensions of human
life.
ALLAH says in Quran:
This is a book, in it is guidance
sure without doubt to those who
fear ALLAH. (2 : 2)
Quran is the primary source of Islamic Law; but it is not in codified form. It
covers all aspects of human action, e.g. moral, ritual, legal and worldly aspects.

The Sunnah Mean

Sunnah is an Arabic word


which means "Method". It was
appliedby the Prophet
Muhammad (peace be upon
him) as a legal term to
represent what he said,
didand agreed to.
The Quran says,

"For you the life of


theProphet is a
model of
behaviour"(Al-Quran
33:21)
Purpose of the Sunnah
The purpose is
To teach us Islam
To teach us how to
implement Islam in our
lives
To teach us how to
understand the divine
guidance and
remembrance, the Qur'an.
Types of Sunnah

1. Sunnat-ul-Qul(Saying) - all
words, counsels or precepts of
the Prophet Muhammad SAW
2. Sunnat-ul-Fi'l (Action)- His
action, works and daily practices
3. Sunnat-ul-Taqrir When
Muhammad kept silent for an
action and did not oppose it.
Elements

A hadith narrative is divided into


two parts:
1. The sanad (chain of
transmission).
2. The matan (content of the
narrative).
Catagories
1. Mutawatir
These are the traditions which have
been transmitted throughout the
first three generations of the
Muslims by such a large number of
transmitters that there is no doubt
that the hadith is genuine.
Catagories
2. Mashhur these are the traditions,
which, having been originally transmitted
in the first generation by two, three or four
transmitters, were later on transmitted on
their authority, by a large number of
transmitters in the next two generations.

3. Ahad There are the traditions,


which were transmitted during the first
three generations of the Muslims by one to
four transmitters only.
