Translations

a
The matrix for translating a point is under the operation of addition.

b

Example 1 : Translate (3, 5) through 4 units in the i (horizontal) direction

and 6 units in the j (vertical) direction.
Solution Let (x, y) be the image point. Then
y

x' 3 4
5

y' 5 6 3

x' 7
i.e. 1

y ' 1
x
0

-1
(7, 1 )
The image of (3, 5) under this translation is (7, 1) -2

-3

-4

-5
Example 2 Translate the parabola y = x2 x through -2 units horizontally
and 3 units vertically.
Solution Let (x, y) be a point on y = x2 x and let (x, y) be its image
under the translation 2
3
The matrix equation for this translation is
x' x 2
y
5

y' y 3
4

3
x = x + 2
Rearranging, 2

y = y 3 1
x
Substituting these into the original equation
-1

y 3 = (x + 2)2 (x + 2) -2
