Verti-G Function

Cuttings fed into the dryer accelerate as they contact the rotating screen
and flights.
Centrifugal force the cuttings onto the screen surface
Centrifugal force separates and propels free contaminated liquids
through the screen
Screen/flights differential speed move solids across the screen
Discharged solids exit through the bottom
Contaminated liquids (Effluent) passes through the screen and are
discharged through a side outlet
Effluent processed by centrifuge to reduce the solids (LGS and HGS)
content

CD518 Overview
High Volume solids removal while processing up to 250 gpm of drilling
mud. Available in either high volume or high speed configurations.

Flexibility Can be tailored to operate in unweighted applications at 1,900

rpm and feed rate of 250 gpm, providing a cut point of 6 to 9 microns and for
finer cuts, operating speed can be adjusted to 3,250 rpm generating
centrifugal force of 2,100 Gs and particles in the 2 to 3 micron cut range

The decanting centrifuge consists of a contour bowl assembly with hard

facing protection in the feed zone, tungsten carbide discharge ports and hard
faced conveyor flights. A two step planetary 3.5 kNm gearbox with a 57.1:1
ratio drives the centrifuge. Additional overload protection is provided with a
reset table mechanical clutch and safety shutdown device.

The differential speed or back drive is V-belt driven by a 10 hp explosion-

proof, electric motor. The differential speed can be adjusted from -18 to +85
rpms.
The variable speed main drive is V-belt driven through a torque converter by
a 25 hp, explosion-proof, electric motor. The main drive (2500 3250 rpms)
bowl speeds are changed by moving the drive belts on the variable step
sheave arrangement

Feed is introduced into the centrifuge via a 2 (50.8 mm) Feed tube

Decanting Centrifuge
A machine for the continuous sedimentation of suspended solids from a liquid by the
action of centrifugal force in an elongated rotating bowl. Continuous unloading of solids
from the bowl is made possible by a conveyor which rotates in the same direction as the
bowl but at a slightly different speed.

Operating Parameter variables

Pond depth:- The liquid radius in the decanter can be changed to obtain either dry or
wet solids discard for maximum solids removal or cleaner effluent

Feed Inlet:- The location of the feed inlet or shooting zone can be modified to reduce
solids conveying distance to obtain either a clean effluent or dry solids discard

Bowl speed:- The bowl speed can be varied to improve particle separation (cut point)
for improved solids removal or a cleaner effluent

Differential speed :- The differential speed can be regulated to improve solids

conveying capacity, to obtain a dryer discard or eliminate possible plugging of the
decanter

Feed rate:- The feed rate can be modified to improve solids removal efficiency, dryer
discard, and particle size separation

Dilution:- The amount of dilution volume added to the feed will reduce the viscosity and
density of the slurry to improve separation and solids removal capability

Parameter effects
For Dryer solids

Increased feed rate (shorter retention time)

Shallow pond ( 121mm weir plates)

Long beach ( long drying area but expect to see increased torque)

Negative differential (opposite direction to the bowl)

For Clearer liquids

Low feed rate (longer retention time)

Deep pond (115mm weir plates)

Shorter beach (drying area but will see wetter /finer solids and higher ROC if using OBM)

Positive differential (same direction as the bowl)

Bowl and Conveyor Speed

This 518 Centrifuge can be operated between 2500 and 3250 rpm's depending on
the application. The conveyor rotates at approximately 35 to 55 rpm's less than the
bowl and in the same direction.
The 518 Centrifuge operate at all times with the bowl and conveyor turning in the
same direction and the conveyor turning slower than the bowl, producing a scrolling
effect.
The main drive motor should be wired so that the bowl always turns clockwise when
viewed from the feed tube end.
The small sunwheel in the gearbox is used to vary the differential speed between
the bowl and conveyor. If the sunwheel is "fixed", that is, not rotated by the back
drive motor, the differential will equal the bowl RPM divided by the gearbox ratio
(57:1).
If it turns in the same direction as the bowl, the differential will be less than when it is
fixed. If it turns in the opposite direction as the bowl, the differential will be greater
than when it's fixed.

18
Bowl speed
Step sheaves having two pitch diameter sizes each on the main drive motor and
bowl sheaves permit operation of the 518 Centrifuge at 1900 and 2500 and 3250
rpm's.
The bowl speed is determined by the combination of sheave sizes selected on
the bowl and motor. The motor mount is made to allow the motor and sheave to
move a full sheave width for proper alignment to obtain the full range of bowl
speeds. (Motor speed 1750 rpm @ 460V 60 Hz)

The weir plates are supplied in three sizes 115mm,

118mm and 121mm, and the sizes are stamped onto the
face of the weir plates.

The plates located on the liquid discharge bowl head of

the rotating assembly are supplied in balanced sets of four
(4) and are must not be interchanged.

The smaller the liquid radius (115 mm) , the deeper the
pond of fluid and shorter the beach or drying area

The larger the liquid radius (121mm) the shallower the

pond of fluid and the longer the beach or drying area

Checking Scroll wear
The scrapping edge of the conveyor is subjected to
wear when the conveyor transports the solids towards
the solids discharge end of the rotating assembly.
The wear rate depends on the size and type of the
solids.
It is necessary, therefore, to check the wear regular
and observe how rapidly it progresses.
It is possible to measure the wear without
dismantling the drum.

Gearbox Lubrication 64O

The gearbox contains two threaded plugs. The two
plugs are magnetic and are removed for oil draining and
filling. The magnetic plugs attract metallic particles from
the component parts of the gearbox and which end up in
the lubricating oil.
The oil level in the gearbox should be checked before
centrifuge operation. Oil level is checked when plugs
are 64 off vertical. Normal oil level is at the highest
plug.
After initial centrifuge operation the oil level should be
checked weekly or whenever bearings are greased. The
magnetic drain plugs should also be checked and any
metallic particles removed

Bearing lubrication
The pillow block and conveyor bearings should be
lubricated every 100 hours of operation.

GS Coupling torque limiter

The torque limiter is a combination of

mechanical and electrical controls.
The small sunwheel shaft has a spring
loaded GS coupling which will limit the torque
that can be applied to the shaft.
If this limit is exceeded the coupling will
disengage and will, by axial movement of the
coupling, trip a limit switch.
This will disconnect power from the bowl
drive motor and the feed pump when
controlled by Centrifuge Control System.

23

GS Coupling location

As the picture shows the micro-switches are

placed under the cover of the rotating
assembly and the back drive assembly
guard. If the cover of the rotating assembly
or the back drive assembly guard is opened,
it will active the switches and begins the
emergency stop of the main electric motor.
In case of the overload, when the torque
demand exceeds the preset value, the
torque limiter will disengage and only
transmits a small residual torque, also
activating the switch (as shown in the
picture) to begin the emergency stop of the
main electric motor. Torque limiter is set
between 67,7-81,3 Nm)

Skimmer Unit

The skimmer unit is designed to float on top

of the waste fluid pit and collect surface oil.
Two floats, one at each end of the unit keep
the unit afloat
A electric driven motor and variator allow the
speed to be manually adjusted as required
to suit the operation
The unit is controlled from a remote starter
panel, in a safe location

There are two rollers on the skimmer unit

These rollers should rotate forward
towards the oil collection tank .
The speed of the rollers can be adjusted
with a manual control handle dependant
on operational requirements
As the rollers rotate they pick up oil which
adheres to the surface of the rollers .

28
Environmental Solutions

Oil wipers

The two oil recovery rollers each has

a rubber oil wiper between it and the
oil recovery tank
These wipers are mounted in a spring
loaded frame which keep the wipers
tight up against the rollers
When the oil on the rollers comes into
contact with wipers, the oil is scraped
off and is deposited in the collection
tank beneath

The oil recovery tank measures 1300mm

long x 300mm wide x 200mm deep.
Capacity approx. 0.5 bbls
A simple ball type float level switch is located
on the tank which is linked to the oil recovery
pump.
When the level of oil reaches rises and the
switch activated the pump will automatically
start and transfer the oil to a dedicated pre
determined location.
