Topic 1 Experimental Design

An experiment tests how manipulating a single variable

will affect the measured results.

Experimental Variables
A variable in an experiment is something that can change or be changed.
Variables affect results. There can be only one variable in an experiment.
Independent / Test Variable Dependent / Outcome Variable
The single factor that is being The observed or measured result(s)
manipulated by the of manipulating the independent / test
experimenter variable

Constants
All of the other possible variables (environmental or
within the design itself) that could affect the results.
The variables must be controlled (kept the same).

Experimental Procedure
All constants should be addressed within the materials and procedures of the
experiment.
Repetition repeated trials; data across trials should be consistent (similar); if
not, data is not reliable
Replication others should be able to redo experiment by following the procedure
and get similar results; if not, the experiment is not valid
Test Groups
Chosen so results can be observed / measured as the I.V. is
increased, decreased, or manipulated in another way
If possible, include a control group test group in which the I.V. has
been removed or is in another way the researched norm
