GLOBALISATION AND

CULTURE-
EFFECTS OF GLOBALISATION

Joy Aditya Barua
Introduction
The paradox of the present times is that with
globalisation we expect that the world becomes
well connected and get closer due to the intermixing
of various cultures and people.
The assumption that the importance of boundaries
will be dissolved and countries will come together
like the European Union has somehow not worked
Example
Lets take a simple example-
The European Union (EU), does not call their

members by country of origin but rather by their

greater title, European citizens.
You could consider European Union as the first and

somewhat successful affect of Globalisation.

However, this unification provided a sense of non
representation in other countries.
European Union
You could consider European Union as the first and
somewhat successful affect of Globalisation.
However, this unification provided a sense of non
representation in other countries.
This led to formation of a large number of unions,
whose members include countries with almost same
economical features. For Example, African Union,
OPEC, SAARC etc.
Lets take an example
No one calls the OPEC citizens as OPECians, and

are rather divided into Arabians, Iranians etc.

Now any citizen of Germany will have an equal

chance of being called German or European. You

might not agree, but this is the case.
Impact
A common man gets a fell of non-representation or
non belongingness to the community.
This is one of the reasons why jihadis are able to get
so many followers.
Corporate Globalisation
Lets take another point into consideration Economic
marginalization or in other words, Corporate
Globalisation.
As transnational corporations increasingly take over
the role of the states involvement in the economic
sector, the government loses its status as a welfare
provider.
Globalization is seen as Western imperialism, as
well as Americanization.
For instance, globalization encourages people to
buy MNC goods and services( 70% Mncs being
from America and Europe ), which ultimately
undermines deep-rooted communal values.
Simply put, individuals are bombarded with
McDonalds, Nike, and Amazon.
General effects of Globalization
Unemployment
Countries with liberal macroeconomic reforms, pursued
politics, flexible labor markets and employment practices,
decentralized industrial relations systems, and judicious
enforcement of labor
On the other hand, countries with employment laws,
regulations, and policies experienced higher level of
employment because they were not able to attract and
retain as many new jobs"
Eg. Indonesia faced unemployment and poverty , health
conditions worsened, and the natural environment degraded
Western Culture

Spread of western culture and influence at the

expense of local culture in developing countries
Ignorance of their own culture and practice western
culture. Ex. dressing styles, language
All these can affect management in one way or
another ex misunderstandings because of language
barrier
Trade

High tariff rates in developing countries

Deepened the gap between global firms and
traditional industries
Protectionist policies in industrialized countries prevent
many producers in the Third World from
accessing export market
The risks of banking and currency crises
Race to the bottom
transnational corporations maximize profit without
regard for the development needs of individual
countries or the local population
international trade deepens income inequalities
Ex. Many governments in Latin America (e.g. Peru)
liberalized
Conclusion
Two conflicting understanding of culture and
globalisation
Efficacy of Americanism in Globalisation
Clash of Civilisations led to the rise of forces
The rise of radical forces who were inward looking ,
fundamentalism erupted
Led to radicalisation to be a justified act of
preservation and nationhood
Led to intolerance for everything global, liberal and
diverse
Rise of notorious forces like Taliban
Increase in mob-lynching activities in India
Further colonolization and propel the loss
of individualism
Minor way to check on economic trades by
excluding corporations from political participation
